In Montgomery the vice president of National City Lines said the company would back any driver arrested for enforcing desegregation orders on Montgomery buses. City officials vowed to arrest anyone allowing segregation, as tension rises over the boycott following the Supreme Court ruling.
A three year contract between Northern California canneries and the cannery workers union passed by a large vote. The pact covers Hunt Foods and two smngler operations in Hayward and Centerville with retroactive wage gains and a pension plan. Peak southern Alameda County employment reaches about 4300 workers.
SAN FRANCISCO The California Public Utilities Commission granted temporary increases of up to 10 percent to trucks and railroads hauling general commodities. Exclusions include petroleum, cattle, fruits and vegetables, and furniture. Dump truck haulers are also unaffected. The move aims to offset higher wage costs.

A deadly tenement fire in North Philadelphia killed nine residents, likely all Negroes, with six believed to be children. The victims were found in a third floor front bedroom as flames consumed the structure. Fire officials said there was no chance of escape and noted the upper floors were wrecked. Two other occupants were rescued as investigators probed a possible second floor rear room start. In Los Angeles May 9 an invitation for a televised debate between Adlai Stevenson and Senator Estes Kefauver was extended by KNXT news director Sam Zelman. The proposal would air statewide from 10 to 11 p.m. if arrangements are perfected and Kefauver’s campaign agrees to participate.
In Elmhurst authorities seized 115000 dozen eggs destined for Chicago bakeries. Officials said the containers were rancid with yolks dissolved and emitted a stinking mass. The eggs were fed and destroyed under supervision of the State Division of Foods, Dairies, and Standards.
Senate investigators said they will subpoena M. Chotiner, Nixon campaign manager, for questioning about his legal services for a blacklisted government contractor. Chotiner did not appear as subpoenaed and sent a telegram citing personal legal matters in California from April 26 to May 2, prompting continued subcommittee action.
James Kidder, a 21 year old Hayward high graduate, won the UC Berkeley student body presidency with 1614 votes, defeating rivals 754 and 471. A pre law student and campus leader, he has served on the executive committee and as vice president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. His father, James E. Kidder, is a former Hayward high district trustee.
UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold expressed confidence he would secure Jordan's agreement to a cease fire after discussions with Jordanian leaders. The talks reviewed the UN Security Council resolution and included plans to strengthen UN truce observers. Meanwhile the Mars Caroline and sister ships were en route to the West Bank to observe refugee camps, with Hamarskjöld due back in Beirut after a flight to Alameda Naval Air Station.
