State study weighs six lane Mission Boulevard widening

Hayward councilman reports a state study on widening Mission Boulevard from Interstate 680 in Fremont to South Hayward. The plan envisions a six lane route with a mile long south segment and east side widening near Route 248. Officials note possible delays if Route 238 alternatives are used and expect completion by June.

Weinreb Lepore win Hayward school board race

Dr Marvin Weinreb won a third term on the Hayward school board as Al Lepore led the field with 2597 votes. Weinreb received 2409, Heathern ?1637, Haertel 557, Mahoney 0, Manley 268, with about 17 percent turnout. Lepore credited focus on classroom programs.

Castro Valley vote keeps incumbents as turnouts stall

In Castro Valley only about 5 percent of registered voters cast ballots. Incumbents Mrs. Helen Duffey and Paul Charles held seats, while write-in Gy Pritz ran notably strong with 23 votes. Rhodes and others trailed, turnout barely half of the county’s usual figure, prompting plans to push counseling programs and student concerns.

Veteran trustees face off in New Haven district vote

Incumbent Syd Furman led with 1 001 votes to 957 for J Frank Belden and 648 for Kim Patterson. Richards placed fourth with 839, Bert Perez had 776, and Granville Pearson trailed with 18. Fewer than expected voters turned out, with about 10 percent turnout from Union City and south Hayward. Belden praised curriculum emphasis and thanked supporters, noting Richards’s long service.

Chinn Re-elected To College Board In South County Race

Trustee B J Chinn won a fourth term on the South County Junior College District board, securing 13 832 of 18 491 votes cast from 153 820 registered voters, a 12 percent turnout. Opponent Steve Mick, a Chabot College graduate and Libby Laboratories production manager in Berkeley, received 4 659 votes.

Seale Winner in Oakland Runoff as Reading Narrowly Falls

Oakland voters produced a runoff between Bobby Seale and incumbent Mayor John Reading after Reading captured 49.92 percent to Seale’s 19.21 percent in a record 69 percent turnout. Berkeley meanwhile blocked radicals from city council control and backed a marijuana measure near 2 to 1. Seale campaigned nationwide for the Black Panthers while Reading emphasized job growth and business attraction.

Police Building Plans Win Okay For Hayward

Hayward city councilmen approved design and preliminary plans for a 1.5 million police building on West Winston Avenue. The move advances an August bid date for an objective nearly five years old, funded by the city’s unity tax already sufficient to cover the project. Funds will construct on city-owned land at the northwest corner of Win Back page.
