Valley City Service Costs Study Initiated by County

Acting County Administrator Roland Mayne was empowered to collect data from county department heads on the cost of furnishing city-type services on a contractual basis to Castro Valley. The County board referred a cost inquiry from the Castro Valley Incorporation committee, seeking unit costs for services including police protection, emergency police, jail, ambulance, business license enforcement, tax collection, health and sanitation, law enforcement, and street maintenance.

Steel Boom Mushrooming Says Iron Age Report

New York based Iron Age says the steel boom is mushrooming with major producers operating above capacity and backlogs rising. Incoming business runs as much as 50 percent beyond capacity among larger mills, and weekly steel output may surpass 300000 tons, potentially reaching 97 to 98 percent of capacity this year.

Hayward groups push withdrawal from recreation district

A South Hayward civic meeting urged residents to withdraw from the Hayward Area Recreation District over tax funding. Mrs. Vera Woodworth led the drive, noting 36 cents per $100 for parks plus 22 cents for the district, and warned of a proposed $4.5 million bond that could raise taxes 20 to 25 years. She also urged South Hayward’s removal from the Tennyson fire district to avoid double taxation.

Alameda County health officials report that vaccination for polio will begin May 9 in Alameda County schools. Of 11,776 children given vaccine or placebo, seven paralytic polio cases occurred among the injected or non injected groups. six paralytic cases were among non injections. High Site Plans Ambitious Move Toward Sixth City

San Lorenzo weighs incorporation as a new sixth city with boundaries extending east of Foothill Boulevard north of Hayward.
