In Ann Arbor April report Dr Thomas Francis endorses Salk vaccine as safe and potent against polio with 80 to 90 percent effectiveness. The abstract notes bulbar polio patients benefited greatly and that two inoculations may suffice for immunity, enabling 43 million more children to be vaccinated by June.
In Southern Alameda County, primary grade students finally received the Salk polio vaccine in 1954 after a protracted testing period marked by indecision and a district attorney’s adverse ruling. A total of 7359 youngsters participated, the only California cohort in the state study.
Mt Eden Elementary School district will take part in the second Sall polio vaccine test as trustees agreed last night. Youngsters not reached in the first test may receive the vaccine after parental approvals. Trustees granted use of the district’s schools to Alameda County Health Department. The district also approved Hayward Area Recreation District use of three schools for the June 7 recreation bond issue election. The district received a check for 4317 in returned premiums on insurance rate reductions from last year. Trustees authorized bidding for black topping 20 000 square feet at Schafer school for an additional playground. cost estimated at 12 to 15 cents per square foot. Superintendent E C Ingraham reported that architects Higgins and Root and contractor Wilfred May checked Schafer school and okayed occupancy.

Eight persons perished when a three story apartment building in Saratoga Springs NY burned. Seven victims were the Abeel family Gilbert 42 Madeline and five children ages five to sixteen. One more body found unidentified and several residents were injured. The Abeels last were seen clinging to a window as flames swept their unit.
The San Leandro Federated Improvement Clubs of Southern Alameda county will guest Mulford Gardens Improvement Club for Thursday evening at Hayward High School's usual meeting site. The event moves to the clubhouse at 13075 Aurora Avenue Mulford Gardens. Guest speaker Mrs Vera N Wadsworth of Tennyson Improvement Club will discuss the June proposed bond of 1508.

An early morning blaze along the Washington Avenue overpass destroyed a Western Pacific freight car.
