Councilman Gene Rega of Pleasanton returned from Kaiser Hospital Oakland after brain surgery on Sunday following a Saturday collision with a Southern Pacific Railroad train. His wife and son Kevin were injured but not severely. Mrs. Rega reports he is in very good condition though eye injuries from glass fragments may be temporary or permanent.
A hit and run driver struck a PG&E pole near North Lane and Saklan Road south of Hayward Airport, briefly cutting power to about 2,000 West Hayward customers. The pole contact damaged two high voltage lines, leaving Winton Avenue and Industrial Boulevard in darkness. Power was restored to 101st customers by 7:58 a.m.
A 21 year old man, identified as Joint Doe, was arrested at Bank of California on East 14th Street after police received reports he passed stolen checks. He was charged with four counts of assaulting officers following the arrest, as patrolmen and two others subdued him. Mace found in his jacket pocket caused minor injuries to officers.
Castro Valley fire officials report an eight year old patient in Eden Hospital's fifth floor geriatrics ward started a bed fire with matches he obtained from an unknown source. The blaze caused about 300 dollars in damage but injured none of the four patients. Capt. Emory Mumford led the response, with matches previously confiscated on admission. The alarm rang at 12 10 am during the incident.
A 78-year-old San Lorenzo man Elmer W Bijan of 545 Via Marzanas was badly injured yesterday when his car was struck at the Via Mancanas and Via Chiquita intersection. He was taken to Eden Hospital with fractured ribs facial cuts and a fractured arm in serious condition. The other driver Evelyn F Trumm 50 of Hayward was cited for failing to yield at a stop sign.
Santa Clara County supervisors voted unanimously to back a federal bill creating a 17,000 acre wildlife refuge in the southern San Francisco Bay area. Opposed by Leslie Salt Co president Coleman C. Johnson, who warns the plan would jeopardize salt production on his 11,600 acre property. The refuge bill was introduced in the House by regional compressmen from San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo and Alameda counties.
Alameda County Jail must clothe naked prisoners in isolation. Judge Robert L. Bostick ordered overalls and added wash basins and three daily flushings of floor holes as sanitation. Warren Wells, 22, who faces a second trial for an April shootout with police, had raised concerns of cruel treatment.

PROVIDENCE RI AP A Brink's armored guard was killed during a suspected payroll holdup at H P Howl Sons dairy plant. John Glendenning 35 of Warwick was shot three times as he carried payroll upstairs. A gunman dressed as a woman staged the robbery and fled in a car aided by an accomplice. Police recovered the loot later in Eagle Park and searched the area for suspects.
President Nixon proposed a three point NATO plan during a North Atlantic Treaty Organization ministers conference. He urged periodic deputy foreign minister meetings, creation of a political planning group for long range issues, and a committee to study the challenges of modern society to improve quality of life.
DETROIT AP Two men rounded up after a midnight burglary at New Beth el Baptist Church last month were charged with murder in the death of Patrolman Michael Czapski and assault to murder in the shooting of Patrolman Richard Warobee. Rafael Viera, 20, of New York, and Alfred Hibbitt, 38, of Detroit, were named in federal fugitive warrants. Viera, a Puerto Rican, is charged with first degree murder. Hibbitt, a Black man, is charged with assault to commit murder. Additional warrants were issued for two unidentified suspects. Hibbitt was among ten questioned and ordered released, with a $1,000 bond set for future questioning.
A young girl was found dead near the Oakland Estuary at Oak Street. Police report indicate her face was smashed and clothing scattered nearby, prompting an urgent investigation into a sex killing case in Oakland.
UPI reports a bright blue fireball streaked across the San Francisco Bay area before dawn. Police described a suspected meteor event, with debris or a body reportedly dragged downstream of the impact path, as investigators assess the object’s origin and effects.
More than 400 officers cleared about 200 protesters from Harvard University Hall after a mass seizure by youths. Three people were injured and around 200 arrested as police in helmeted formations pushed into the historic yard.
Washington AP report details the Federal Trade Commission pursuing a breakup of Litton Industries, a major U.S. conglomerate with German holdings. The move follows pressure from the State Department and embassy telegrams in Bonn urging open hearings despite German concerns and Litton’s pleas. Unruh challenges Reagan on a proposed tax plan citing a $703.5 million figure from the Franchise Tax Board and Assembly experts. A 7 year old boy playing with matches started a fire at 1:35 pm yesterday in a Clinton Street home in Livermore. Fire Captain George Brown placed total damages at about $5,000 with $3,000 in structural damage and $2,000 to contents. The blaze began in a bathroom and no injuries were reported. the boy, who called to report the fire, was too shaken to provide the address.
D-Wis. Rep Gaylord Nelson warned that closing Job Corps centers would worsen poverty areas as hearings on a poverty program begin in May. The program now enrolls 35,506 high school dropouts across 62 rural centers, 24 urban centers, and six special centers, with a budget of 285 million for the current year and 280 million for the next 12 months.
