Republicans in the Senate Finance Committee are convening in Washington on Saturday at 10 o clock to consider the general financial bill for the coming session. Chairman Aldrich is said to have prepared a bill based on fines agreed upon during last summer's Republican conference to guide next week’s deliberations.

London reports Methuen’s ten hour assault at Modder river yielding a British advantage and heavy casualties. Dispatches note Boer defense with gallantry, uncertain river crossing outcomes, and looming engagements toward Kimberley as Cronje’s forces may rally after the siege paused.
General Methuen reports from Capetown that on November 28 at Modder River British forces attacked entrenched Boer positions. After ten hours of fierce fighting under the burning sun with artillery mounted troops and naval brigade aid, the enemy finally withdrew. General Pole-Carew crossed the river with a small party.
A Washington dispatch reports Great Britain vigorously protested to the U S government against prop osed expeditions aiding the Boers. Lord Pauncefote briefed the state department, with Hay referring him to the war department. Filibustering groups are said to be organized with Dutch and French money, aiming to sail from Havre and other ports. The departments pledge to prevent armed expeditions to the Transvaal.
London dispatch details the Gras Pan fight as Boer positions on kopjes near the railway repelled by Lord Mechuen's guns and a bold Ninth brigade infantry assault. Boers retreated from the heights though pursuit by the Ninth lancer failed amid rough terrain and heavy fire.
The report notes that although the British victory occurred, it is not decisive and the engagement did not happen on Free State territory, with prior combats all taking place on British soil.
A Washington dispatch reports a Republican conference to decide how to handle seating polygamist-elect Roberts from Utah. Key figures Hepburn Payne Dalzell Grosvenor Taylor and others will weigh precedents and whether Roberts can be expelled or sworn in on election certificates.
Former Senator Edmunds says the constitution sets qualifications for House members and the body has no right to add new standards. If Mr Roberts meets the age, Utah residency, and oath requirements, he should be sworn in. The house could then remove him for reasons it deems fit.
A basement blaze at Partridge and Rich Sons department store on North 8th Street sparked a rapid fire that destroyed nearly four blocks of business. Losses exceed 3,000,000 with J B Lippincott & Co. and Partridge & Richardson among the largest victims. Numerous other shops suffered substantial damage with smaller losses across the district.
Manila reports Colonel Bell's Thirty-sixth Infantry and Fowler's company of the Thirty-third rout rebels west of Mangialaren after a dawn dawned assault. Rebels abandoned artillery, rifles, and supplies as they fled swamp trails, with hundreds captured or dispersed. Aguinaldo’s location not stated.
Manila reports a naval bombardment and ground landing near Vigan as American forces hold the town until relief by troops. Insurgent force under Generals Tinio and Pilar massed at Taguden, while Aguinaldo reportedly moves north toward Abra province with remaining forces.
Washington dispatch reports General Leonard Weed met with Secretary Root and received approval for troop withdrawal from Cuba. Orders to implement the reduction would be issued soon, ending the current deployment.
