Trial recounts insanity plea and defense witness
In a tense courtroom, the defense argues insanity for Burns. The prosecution aims to tie Paddy Miles’s murder to the Burns case as witnesses describe Burns’s memory gaps and a blank mind after prior injuries. The defense chief witness, a veteran miner and blacksmith, testifies he suffers memory lapses and hallucinations from an old injury, saying he recalls little of the incident and only learned of the shooting after being told by an official. The court allows depositions on the defendant’s reputation, and medical testimony links head injuries to mental decline, with a physician noting hardening of the mind as the trial proceeds.
