No Hanging in Colorado Riot Ends at Burning Stake

Simon Col. Nov 17 Porters capture by sheriff led to crowd execution at the depot. A rail bound him to a segment of railroad, wood piled, and the victim burned alive amid a large, silent crowd. The mob, not the law, delivered justice for Louise Frost’s murder. Governor Thomas declined comment on the extralegal act.

Record of Internal Revenue Shows High Receipts

The 1900 fiscal year ended June 30 reports total internal revenue receipts of $295,356,107, the second highest in bureau history, with a 1.58 percent cost of collection the smallest ever. Commissioner Wilson forecasts about $295,000,000 for the current year and urges amendments to the war revenue act, notably the 10 cent tax on certain declarations.

Inquest Dropped Over Porter Jr Burnings at Lake Station

Simon company reports no inquest will be held into the Lake Station burning of Preston Porter Jr also called John Porter. Authorities say remains are gone and the coroner cannot convene. An iron rail used in the execution remains as a warning while a mound covers ashes and about seven hundred witnesses are noted. Women largely absent during the cremation though many visited beforehand.

The passage notes recommended abolition of the act and lists yearly receipts from sources: Spirits 109,868,817. Tobacco 50,855,084. Fermented liquors 73,550,754. Oleomargarine 2,543,785. Filled cheese 17,064. Mixed flour 7,439. Other taxes including theaters 4,156,640. Increases and decreases are shown for each category, with legacies and distributive shares of personal property at 2,884,491 and schedules A and B totaling 40,964,465, plus miscellaneous 2,921.

Brig. Gen. A. W. Greely reports the Signal Corps far exceeded prior years in work and duties. Arrests Shake Shanghai Dispatch Reports Princes Tuan and Yu Hsien

A Shanghai dispatch says Prince Tuan is jailed at Nighaia and Governor Yu Hsien is arrested at Pinan near Sianfu. Bheng, head of telegraphs and railroads, memorializes the throne denouncing Yu Hsien. An edict condemning Yu Hsien to death is expected.

Convicts at Large After Prison Break Near Amber

After a running fight with guards, convicts shelter in Amber timber surrounding the penitentiary. Shots exchanged last evening. one convict reportedly shot but daylight reveal no hits. Guards search timber. Sam Smith said wounded yet alive but likely dying. Smith’s crimes traced from Sumner county to a train robbery and murder in 1898. he was sentenced to death and returned to the prison. Reinforcements surround a barn west of the prison. the suspects are heavily armed and surrendered or be fired upon. Warden Linson has called up federal prison for Krag-Jorgensen rifles as backup.

United States and French troops clashed briefly at a river bridge in Tien Tsin China over pass regulations. A Philippine of junks led to a fist fight after an American guard attempted to pass three boats abreast. Sumner intervened, bridge opened.

The emperor had a good day yesterday slept about an hour and had a daytime temperature around 100.5 with a pulse near 70. Last night he slept adequately and this morning remains improved with temperature 100.5 and pulse 70. His general condition is cited as good and the illness progressing normally.

A major blaze hit Philippi West Virginia on November 17 threatening the town center. The Plain Dealer office hotel several weeks and three residences were destroyed as flames engulfed the area.

New York November 17 The Mail and Express reports two large railroad deals linking Northern Pacific Great Northern and Union Pacific with Atchison Southern Pacific systems. J J Hill and J Pierpont Morgan drive the plans dissolving the Northern Pacific voting trust to allow Great Northern control. Deutsche Bank remains a stock holder and Hill will shift leadership to Samuel Hill while remaining GN chairman.
