San Francisco May 19 The Examiner reports C P Huntington president of the Southern Pacific Co says SP and Santa Fe are jointly interested in a new Salt Lake to Los Angeles route. It would require constructing about 400 miles of new track from Salt Lake south to the Mojave Desert area the Santa Fe serves.
The plan envisions a route east of the Union Pacific line from Salt Lake via Milford to the Nevada state line. A company will be organized with financial backing from Southern Pacific and Santa Fe. The line would boost local traffic and overland business and open coal fields in Utah without affecting SP’s Los Angeles Ogden Carson route.
A telegram from Great Northern Passenger Agent Whitney announced July 1 passenger rates in Washington state lines owned by the company will drop to three cents per mile from four. Local offices of Northern Pacific and O R N did not know of any similar plans.

Washington May 19 William H Hunt of Montana has been chosen as secretary of state for the Island of Porto Rico. The examination of charges against C. R. W. Neely accused of embezzling $36,000 of Cuban postal funds was postponed for one week by the court in New York on May 19.
