Montana cayuse horses ship to South Africa for Strathcona unit
D A Richardson of Lewiston reports Montana cow horses from Great Falls region are being trained and shipped to South Africa to mount the Strathcona cavalry contingent led by Colonel Steele. About 500 rugged Montana horses were bought, inspected in Calgary and Lethbridge, then sent to Halifax and onto the Canadian contingent. The horses, 11 to 16 hands and 850 to 1,060 pounds, were chosen for endurance and light cavalry tasks, with no bays or white markings accepted. The Canadian government pays no duty on war animal purchases, making the price favorable despite some criticism in Canadian papers.
