Prohibition of Silver Not a Paramount Issue in Campbell Interview
Congressman A J Campbell, returning from Washington via Chicago, says Bryan will likely be the Democratic nominee and New York will stay solid for him. He notes many disaffected Democrats who voted McKinley in 1896 may back Bryan due to opposition to imperialism and the Porto Rican tariff. He believes silver will be an issue but not paramount, with imperialism and trusts taking higher priority. Campbell declines to state future plans or renomination intentions. He mentions the Montana senate seating debate and compares the Montana case to the Quay case. He expects Maginnis seating only if the Senate acts. He plans to spend the summer in Montana and has no definitive plans beyond that.
