Davis estate tax dispute trims Montana levy in court
Attorney General Nolan met with county officials over the Davis estate inheritance tax. Appraiser’s report put state and county due at 40,000 dollars, but a recent court decision drops it to about 8,000 dollars since Davis did not directly possess the property. The AG argues heirs’ 1896 distribution makes full tax due. he may ask the court to reset to 40,000. Nolan suggests Governor Smith might have called an extra session for finance bills, criticizing the last legislature’s work as incomplete.
