Vein of Bad Luck Shot and Killed a Man in the Lowlands
Daniel Leydick, aged 63, recounts his troubled past in Butte after recent release from prison. In 1892 in the Lowlands he shot rancher F. J. Coss following a dispute over wood chopping. Coss died after 30 days. Leydick was convicted of manslaughter, served ten years, was attacked in prison, later released, and now seeks relief from poverty and sympathy from the court. He recalls Civil War service with the Fourteenth Pennsylvania and a single battle on the Potomac with one leg wound.
