On January 1 at Isle of Wight a noon bulletin reported Queen Elizabeth II suffering femur prostration with anxiety symptoms. Crowds gathered at the Mansion House as rumors of her death circulated. later updates said her condition remained unchanged. The Duke of Connaught was summoned from Berlin to attend the Prussian centennial celebration.

Berlin reports the grand court reception scheduled for Monday and Wednesday has been postponed due to Queen Victoria's serious illness and the emperor's departure for England.

London January 19 6 p m British cruiser Minerva sails from Portsmouth to intercept Emperor William and the Duke from Flushing to Osborne. Telegraph recalls the Duke of Cambridge from Paris.
London dispatches note conflicting telegrams on the queen’s condition with an improved tone in some reports. The Prince of Wales and Princess Louise departed by special train toward Cowes at 1 10 pm while rumors of a paralytic stroke circulated.
Washington January 19 Attorney General Griggs issues an opinion after a Treasury request. It holds that Hawaiian born Chinese laborers born in 1886 taken to China with their mothers may reenter Hawaii if the father resides there. It also says the wife and children of a Chinese naturalized in 1887 may enter Hawaii via the husband’s citizenship, assuming they were citizens under Hawaii law on August 1 1898 and had not lost rights.
Washington expects Britain to amend the Hay-Pauncefete treaty but doubts Senate acceptance. Officials cite no knowledge of British amendments and rely on general Senate mood toward the canal project and Britain’s interest in maintaining transit rights.
Washington noted the Senate devoted most of its session to eulogies for the late Senator John H Gear of Iowa who died in July. A resolution called for War Department reports on education in the Philippines and another celebrated John Marshall’s 100th anniversary of Chief Justice tenure. Dover Delaware January 19 only four members attended joint balloting for two United States seminars though no election was possible due to lack of a quorum. The constitutional requirement for annual balloting was observed in form by the four men.
Chicago reports a diamond valued at 22500 stolen from Louise Bowers wife of songwriter Frederick Howers while she was away from her hotel apartment. Mrs Bowers departed for New York last evening and details remain unclear.
In Paterson the Bosschieter trial jurors deliberated over four hours before delivering a mixed verdict. Five jurors favored first degree murder, one for acquittal, with the weighing of evidence continuing for over three hours. The defendants face further court action, with Kerr to be tried later this term and appeals anticipated. The murdered Jennie’s mother expressed hope for justice.
A Washington report states Chile proposed partitioning Bolivia among four South American nations. Peru and Bolivia’s ally Cuba? no, Peru rejected, Santa Maria government asked Chile to recall its minister Custodio Vienna. Bolivia deemed too weak to resist a multi nation attack, while Chile seeks to end Peru Bolivian ties and claim Tacna and Arica provinces.
A Vernon British Columbia report says Leo English, 20, shot and killed Thomas Carson on a street after charges of ill treatment against Mrs Carson motivated the act. English had purchased a revolver days earlier, fearing Carson would kill him, and Carson allegedly struck English with a club before the shooting. Carson reportedly kept a club in his grip when found.
New York Comptroller Leroy of New York spoke to the Outlook club in Montclair on The City of New York. He argued the metropolis is improving, not corrupt, citing daily revenues near three quarters of a million, heavy spending on education, charity, and public improvements, and noting that New York maintains more good works than any other city.
The World reports a vigilante group formed by trusted city club members with Bishop Potter backing. They may enroll up to 500 men to investigate police corruption and disorder nationwide, urging public focus on police abuses and avoiding illegal acts while advocating prudence and investigation. Also noted is Moses E. Coy’s nomination at the St. Paul Republican caucus for the U.S. Senate on the first ballot.
London reports Gen Kitchener’s favorable British movements with Col Grey and New Zealanders winning success against 800 Boers near Ventersburg and Colville’s victory on Viyaakte road. Boers suffer losses in attacks while guerrilla warfare persists and Cape Colony loyalty steadies.
The National Wool Growers assembly opened at 10 o clock with delegates present. Acting President Frank P Bennett of Boston gave an address before committees were appointed. George H Wallace of New Mexico read a paper on Tariffs and Frank Hagenbarth of Idaho spoke on Inspection of Sheep before adjourning until 2 o'clock.
The Hague announces the engagement of Dike Henry of Mecklenburg Schwerin to Queen Wilhelmina and notes that upon marriage he will receive the title Prince and be granted high military and naval rank, with formal conferral to occur soon after.
Helena Jan 19 The long stalemate in the short term senatorial contest intensifies as Heinze and MacGinnis push a clever scheme to dupe the legislators. MacGinnis has fallen to one vote with 16 lost yesterday and two more today. Circulators spread word his supporters defected while absences mounted. The plan calls for scattering MacGinnis votes to appear nonfactorial, then entering their man during a Saturday absence, backed by scientific lobbying to boost votes. The situation remains unresolved with the end of the contest not in sight.
