Powell County Proposed in Montana Legislature

Special to the Inter Mountain Helena Feb 3 Senate and House adjourn after brief session. A bill to create Powell county with Deer Lodge as seat was introduced along with boundary changes affecting Deer Lodge Lewis and Clark and Flathead. New officers would take office March 1 if enacted, including county commissioners treasurer sheriff clerk and recorder assessor coroner and public administrator. Other measures cover water system bonds, stockholder meetings and state land issues.

Train sinks on coal mine roadbed near Pittsburg

A southbound Kansas City and San Francisco train slowed for a crossing near Pittsburg Kansas when the roadbed sank about six feet into a coal mine. The engine crew then pulled the entire train from the hole onto solid ground. Investigation found the roadbed over a coal mine, causing the subsidence.
