Antique Metal Casket Found Near Newsport Arkansas
Memphian collectors Elledge and Spivy brought a metallic casket to the city claimed as historic. Discovered by a farmer near Newsport in Jackson County at the foot of the White river highlands, the relic was unearthed while plowing. The coffin resembles a sixteenth to seventeenth century mummy wrapper with ironwork and a coat of arms motif. It contains cloth scraps and old armor pieces and shows inscriptions too corroded to read. The casket will be examined to gauge its origin and possible link to De Soto era explorations.
