Walkerville Fires Damage Moulton Assay and American House
Two early morning fires in Walkerville forced the Moulton company to adjust hoses. The Alle Mining office suffered about 250 dollars in losses while the American House, oldest hotel in Walkerville, burned heavily causing about 4,900 dollars in damage. The assay office fire was confined to one room, sparked by spontaneous combustion of phosphite. The American House occupants escaped, but the building was gutted with most personal effects lost. A nearby barn at 427 West Alumina Street burned for about 40 dollars, a horse perished, and the origin of that fire remains uncertain, though believed to be incendiary. The Walkerville fire department received immediate alarms and fought the blazes effectively.
