Boulder Train Narrowly Survives Boulder Crash
Passengers on the Great Northern from Helena to Butte escaped serious harm when a 18 ton boulder slid onto the track a mile and a half from Boulder. The engine struck the rock at about 20 miles per hour, throwing riders from their seats and damaging the cowcatcher. A second engine hauled the disabled train to Boulder, then back to Butte after crews cleared the obstruction. Passengers included Col. Wilbur F. Sanders and architect P. J. Donohoe, whose measurements helped estimate the boulder’s weight. If the rock had fallen 20 seconds later, disaster could have struck the engine or cars, plunging the train into the ravine below. Most grateful to be in Butte today.
