In Carbonale Pennsylvania a half-starved dog named Pal fell into a 40 foot crevasse. J Forrest Mannion and two companions, after days of risky efforts, lowered a rescuer into the crack and pulled Pal to safety. Pal wagged his tail and ate three pounds of steak on rescue.
Marshall Deputy Martin Depew, 37, was sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping Mrs. Nell Donnelly, a wealthy garment maker, on December 16. Co-defendant Lacy Browning received 25 years. Depew admitted hatching the plot and fleeing, while Mrs. Donnelly was released without ransom.
The accused was detained in Johannesburg after a South African departure allegation. He confessed he did not implicate Ethel Depew. Prosecutor Page described plans to use Deputy Ma as a witness while Depew’s wife cried upon learning the Deputy’s sentence. Mrs. Depew claimed he hid a deserted wife and three children in Downington. Mildred 18, Marshall 13, Jean. A $2,500 reward posted by Mrs. Donnelly was paid by Joseph Smith of Newark, who supplied word that Deputy sailed to South Africa. Kidnapping is a capital offense in Missouri.
The Republican convention designated Chairman Snell to head the committee to formally notify President Hoover of his renomination. The committee includes John W. White of Arkansas, George Gino of Kansas, M. E. B. Gilioz of Missouri, James Twyford of Oklahoma, Senator Dickinson of Iowa, and other convention figures.
