UCF directors approve '71 goal of $174,108

United Community Fund led by campaign chairman A. Luc Gray set a 1971 goal of 174,108 for Cole County. Directors noted last year’s total, 172,000, fell short by 11,000, citing the closing of the International Shoe Co. Plant as a major factor. The drive aims to begin Sept. 28 with participation from agencies including the Red Cross, Cancer Research, Heart Research, Cerebral Palsy, and the Salvation Army.

Callaway County to Launch County Ambulance Service

Callaway County will establish an ambulance service after July with two funeral homes winding down. The Court and Hospital in Fulton will operate under a state grant from the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, with a first unit delivery delayed 96 to 120 days. Maupin Funeral Heralds will donate an ambulance to begin service until state-funded units arrive. John Long named new supervisor, leading a 10-man crew as the county tests a three-vehicle setup under interim county control.

Strongest mayor in world claims title in London stunt

London AP reports Champ mayor, 48, 6 ft 5 in and 280 pounds, proclaimed the strongest mayor in the world. He offered a gal ion of whiskey to anyone who could carry the Dinnie stones, 778 pounds each, across the River Dee and back. School aid checks mailed to county treasurers statewide

Vaughn the state comptroller and budget director said the fourth allotment of public school aid totaled 61 754 700 dollars sent to county treasurers Tuesday. The year’s total reached 26 540 852 dollars about 3 percent under last year’s 234 million appropriation.

Jefferson City school board trims tax rate for 1971 72 year

The Jefferson City Board of Education approved a reduced school tax rate for the 1971 72 year lowering the incidental and debt service rate from 3.23 to 3.24 while maintaining the 2.88 operating rate. Helen Aldridge was elected treasurer and Marcia Weaver secretary. Winsor Buttledge was named elementary principal for 1971 72. Twenty one teachers were approved for vacancies next year with five current teachers released. Five LPN contracts were confirmed. Vocational high school study urged to ease junior high congestion with 50 percent federal funding. A school physician will be appointed for emergency two hour weekly service and compensation. School crossing light relocation criticized

The Parking and Traffic Commission opposes moving the school crossing light at Missouri Boulevard and Ohio Street and reiterates its objection to a Highway Department regulation requiring signals to be visible from intersections. It also recommends retaining the 56 mph zone on Route 179 and suggests sidewalks as a solution to pedestrian issues.
