Missouri Legislature Allocates State Funds To Higher Ed And Mental Health

The Missouri legislature passed a budget granting the University of Missouri about 89.99 million dollars for the coming year, roughly 19 million less than requested but about 10 million more than this year. Mental health receives 81.19 million for operating five state hospitals, two school hospitals, three centers and nine clinics, with other state institutions funded in the final package.

Auto Club Opposes Longer Trucks and Wider Buses

The Auto Club of Missouri sent letters to Missouri House members urging opposition to a bill that would permit longer car transport trucks and wider buses. It argues a one foot length increase and an 8 percent width would raise danger in passing maneuvers and create hazards outweighing passenger comfort and capacity gains.

Council seeks dog pound site

Two City Council members were assigned to find a site for the city dog pound after opposition to the proposed fire station location at 915 E. Miller St. NAACP objections cited property value decline and nuisance concerns. A hearing with NAACP led to appointing Strong and Scrivner to search for alternate sites on or off city property.

MU to reexamine admission policies

The University of Missouri will reassess its out of state admission rules after Missouri legislators questioned why 10 of 100 new medical school entrants were nonresidents. Interim president Dr. C Brice Ratchford said several had Missouri ties and acknowledged legitimate questions about the policy.

Sewage problem near solution at Belair Pumping Station

Public Works Director Ed Rackers said the Belair Pumping Station holding pond paving will be completed today. Dry weather allowed bottom paving with crushed rock to cover one foot of mud, reducing odor and weed issues from five years of use as a containment overflow. Fencing will add safety. total project cost estimated at 9000 to 10000 dollars.

Senate approves three appointees in Missouri

The Missouri Senate on Wednesday confirmed H. Duane Pemberton of Springfield as commissioner of finance, succeeding Cully who resigned to join Bank of St. Louis. Also confirmed were Byron Constance of Independence to the Central Missouri State College Board of Regents and James J. Butler of Warrrensburg as chairman of Missouri’s industrial commission.

Schanzmeyers buy 25 acre Zentner property tract

About 25 acres at Ellis Blvd and Route C known as the Zentner property has been sold to Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Schanzmeyer, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Schanzmeyer, and Mr. and Mrs. Pat Schanzmeyer. There are no plans for any specific development at this time, said Charles Smith of Smith Realty. The Schanzmeyers operate a Ford Lincoln Mercury dealership.

Summer registration for Lincoln Lab programs planned

Summer registration at Lincoln University Laboratory School will run from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Monday. The eight week session offers courses in English social studies art science business education and physical education. Classes start at 8 a.m. Monday and end at noon August 8.
