Missouri unemployment dropped to 5 percent in April from 5.2 percent in March, with total state employment rising to 1,937,000. Most of the gain came in nonfarm wage and salaried jobs as seasonal increases in construction and services occurred. Average weekly manufacturing earnings rose to 147.40 and hourly earnings to 3.73.

The Rural Electrification Administration awards a $996,000 loan to Three Rivers Electric Cooperative in Linn to finance 36 miles of distribution line for 425 new customers and to upgrade facilities. Environmental Protection Administrator William Ruckelshaus said he will grant Ford conditional certification to produce and ship 1973 cars if initial tests indicate full compliance in later large scale testing. This would avert a possible 450,000 worker shutdown and allows testing of up to 4,000 miles to begin within 10 to 14 days while continuing 50,000-mile durability tests.
