Washington reports the House Naval Affairs subcommittee rejected elevating Commander Robert E. Peary to rear admiral noting his polar exploration lacks military value. Six hundred bales of Egyptian cotton shipped by rail from Charleston to the upper part of South Carolina mark the first movement of foreign grown cotton into the port for Carolina mills via Liverpool. More of the fleecy staple is expected as experiments show its feasibility for manufacturing, though it is cheaper and somewhat inferior to American cotton. Charleston aims to grow as a foreign cotton importing center while American sea island cotton continues to be exported to English and German mills this season.
Memphis officials analyze state wide prohibition and argue for stricter enforcement and municipal improvements. Mayor Camp supports opposition to prohibition and favors local regulatory steps over nationwide bans. Judge Moss notes that enforcement requires more than judicial action.
In Pittsburg Pennsylvania sixth ward public school pupils learn to imitate birds and fish with small biplanes in a course called aeroplane swimming. A 14 year old pupil Sara Herzberger wowed observers by gliding from a balcony, diving into a pool after a somersault. Professor Walter W. Shook plans summer river and pond demonstrations from boats bridges and banks.
In St Louis over a three week period police records show 728 crimes. The count includes 149 burglaries and 485 robberies by sneak thieves along with 23 highway robberies as department funds inquiry continues.
The Hanover Pool Room near Lawrenceburg Indiana, a Cincinnati resort favored by the racing crowd, was blown up with dynamite. The building was wrecked, and the watchman barely escaped injury. It was a well known destination for sport enthusiasts nationwide and allegedly run by Cincinnati racing men.
In Chattanooga Tennessee a bloody duel occurred in the El street jail office. Guard G W Thomas of the city street gang was fatally shot by Superintendent Matthew Godsey. Thomas died at Erlanger hospital two hours later. Godsey was seriously wounded but expected to recover.
In Washington memorial services marked the twelfth anniversary of the Maine explosion in Havana Harbor. A national movement seeks a monument at Arlington National Cemetery for the sailors lost. Rear Admiral Charles Sigsbee delivered the principal address at a gathering of patriotic organizations.
Washington reports Georgia could gain one to three members if population warrants, possibly reaching 15 or 16 seats in the 62d Congress. In Ma nus v State and Allen v State from Atlanta city court, the Georgia Court of Appeals held that a free license for Confederate veterans to peddle merchandise does not exempt veterans from the $200 state tax on selling near beer.
Tax executions issued by J M Richetts levy on many lots in Lumpkin County. Several districts and sections listed with numerous land numbers to be sold at the court house door on the first Tuesday in May 1910 for taxes due the state and county. Salvage firemen found a live cat with a charred flammable tail string among debris at a cotton warehouse after a Sunday night blaze. Police theorize the animal was sent into the building lit beforehand, supporting suspicions of a series of cotton fires linked to an incendiary ring.
Report claims a Phi Gamma Delta mascot wildcat escaped from the fraternity and entered Madrone Hall, the women’s dorm at Stanford. The intruder was discovered by the residents who raised the alarm and the fraternity members recovered the animal without incident.
