Largest of Blasts at Cherbourg Quarries Displaces 120000 Tons
A colossal blast at the Cherbourg quartzite quarries discharged recently displaced about 120000 tons of rock. A six by six foot tunnel was driven seventy feet into the cliff face with two twenty foot branch tunnels ending in chambers ten by six feet. The chambers held eight and a half tons of blasting powder and 280 pounds of dynamite and the charge was fired electrically. The quartzite is valued in England as road material.
