Clinton Massacre Eyewitness Account of Civil Conflict
A Mississippi witness, executive member of the Democratic Conservative party, recounts the Clinton confrontation of September 4 1875. He describes the joint Clinton Republican Club discussion, escalating mob violence by hundreds of armed black men, white resistance, numerous killings and brutal beatings, and claims the whites faced provoked assault while misrepresentations about whiskey and order are false. He notes three whites killed, eight to ten wounded, and widespread later flight of black leaders.
