Disastrous Fire at Dawson Leaves Ten Buildings Burned
On a Tuesday morning we arrived at Dawson to learn the blaze on the south side of Railroad Street. The conflagration spared no mercy, destroying a row of stores and much stock, with only partial insurance coverage and heroic local efforts to halt its spread. The town expresses sympathy for Dawson while promising rebuilding, phoenix like, from the ruins.

Explosion and editorial feuding at Rome convention
A dramatic lettered expose from Atlanta’s Kimball House editor alleges a Rome agricultural convention speech sparred with accusations of gassing and departure politics. It recounts Gen Young and Col Styles, critiques the New Departure, and defends silence for unity as 1872 approaches. Colonel Fielder addresses Terrell county farmers amid a large turnout. The piece ends with praise for the Atlanta Constitution and a rebuke of Albany News.

Uniform text books for schools proposed and debated
The State Board of Education adopted a uniform series after consulting leading educators and selling these books at half price until November first. The plan saves families from repeat purchases and reduces teacher preparation time, arguing that uniform books benefit pupils regardless of changing schools. The piece also notes a Washington dispatch on a Democratic committee denouncing a radical pamphlet as a partisan fraud. It ends with population projections for London and New York, forecasting New York to overtake London in twenty years.
