The August Georgia Department of Agriculture report lists state crop averages with North Georgia corn 102 and cotton 96, while Middle and South Georgia show corn 77 and cotton 76. It notes a July drought reduced cotton in the south by about one quarter and urges farmers to raise more on-farm supplies, cut cash purchases, and shift to a self sustaining, profit focus.

Appropriations Debate in Georgia Under Democratic Rule
The piece criticizes Georgia’s 1870s appropriations showing $243000 for a State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, plus $15 000 for Lumpkin County repairs, $500 for chemistry lab apparatus, $10000 for the Lunatic Asylum, and salaries for state officials. It questions fiscal priorities and suggests archiving old records under a capitol keeper while noting allocations for public buildings, prisons, printing, and interest on bonded debt. The tone condemns political favors and alleges opaque budgeting under Governor Smith.
