Old Club Ax Davis Sermon in Georgia Backwoods
A New York Independent correspondent recalls an overheated Georgia sermon by Old Club Ax Davis of Scriven County. The preacher championed Baptist and Presbyterian rivalries, mocked Presbyterians through parables, and narrated a chaotic scene with roaming mules. The tale includes a child’s catechism moment and a personal anecdote about a near-fatal wagon accident and an improvised post hoc prayer.
