Guano Use and Cotton Policy Criticized by Farmer Correspondent
A Rome Courier correspondent argues against guano and fertilizer reliance in the Southern cotton belt. He stresses high costs, depressed prices, and misaligned farming incentives. He urges farmers to grow their own provisions and reduce cotton acreage to escape ongoing poverty. A farmer signs off with a warning about agricultural policy and market dynamics. Also notes a physician’s home remedy for snake bites using egg yolk and salt.

Where the Cotton Worm Originates
At a Hartford meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Aug last, Aug R Grote read on the cotton caterpillar. The worm appears first in Alabama late June to mid July, heralded by the moth attracted to lights. The southern army migrates north as long as the season lasts. The moth, first described as Aletia argullaces from Bahia, Brazil, is destructive in Mexico and the West Indies. Grote says it dies out with winter food decline, with fresh immigrations next season. It can fly extended distances and has been found in Buffalo and Chicago. The permanent home is outside the cotton belt. the Aletria is not indigenous here but an annual visitor, demanding action against the first blood.
