Fire destroys Capt. Smith residence and alarmed city
On Monday evening the home of Captain B J Smith on College street burned to ashes after sparks ignited the dry roof. Firemen saved the house but faced delays from crowd interference and a second blaze at Mrs Thornton’s dwelling opposite. Some firefighters were overcome by smoke but saved both buildings.

House Debate Drops Usury and Exemption Bills
The House debated a special order to restore the homestead exemption to pre 1868 levels but the measure failed 89 to 59. The Senate Finance Committee opposed exempting $100 of personal property from taxation. A substitute on usury limits allows contract interest up to 12 percent. The Senate passed a bill exempting all persons over sixty from jury duty.

Sad Death of Mrs Wiseman Near Dawson
Mrs. Mary E. Wiseman was burned to death at four miles west of Dawson on Friday the 5th. She saved her infant, tried water, found the barrel icebound, and her son arrived too late. She leaves seven children, youngest three months, oldest sixteen, with grateful note on their future homes.
