Perjury Case Leads to Release in Georgia Federal Question
During the October election Doc Williams and several African Americans were jailed for perjury by Mr Ken Terrell in Randolph County. Williams received eight years in the penitentiary while Ross earned a new trial delaying his sentence. Dr Guild later filed a writ of abens corpus seeking Williams’s release. Judge Erskine freed Williams on the theory that state and federal courts are distinct and that Georgia perjury laws apply only to state courts, leaving federal jurisdiction unaddressed. Similar arguments may free Ross.
