Wyly steamer sinks after colliding with Fort Gaines bridge
The Wyly steamer on the Chattahoochee struck a pier near Fort Gaines at about 10 pm on a Wednesday, sank immediately, with nine lives lost including seven deck hands and two clerks. Crew and passengers were rescued from the current, while the two clerks Mr. H. L. Palmer of Columbus and Mr. W. J. Rivers of Florida perished. The boat, owned by the Central road, was commanded by Capt. Whitesides, with survivors en route to Augusta.
