City council meeting notes show Mayor and aldermen addressing main thoroughfare lighting. A committee was tasked to gather information on Dunsmuir avenue lighting while reports urged cleaning of sewer man holes and drains.
J R Lockhart travels to Victoria as general superintendent for Canadian Collieries Dunsmuir Ltd. Judge Abrams commits Hopkins for trial at Nanaimo assizes. Mrs John J Wier trips to Victoria with daughter Mrs Forsyth. two year mining contracts proposed upon start of operations. Italians meet at West Cumberland with G W Clinton presenting company side. Council urged to renew sanitary conditions at Matheson property including septic tank. thirty day deadline set. Ald Willard invites Courtenay Exhibition attendance by mayor and aldermen.
A mass meeting of United Mine Workers and Canadian Collieries employees in Cumberland Hall formed an eight member committee to meet management and pursue a settlement over alleged discrimination. Manager Lockhart indicated only employee committee talks possible and denied discrimination claims. The committee reported tension over Ladysmith workers and Mottishaw. The committee withdrew after discussions.
Kingston Ont September 24 Sir Richard Cartwright longtime Minister of Trade and Commerce in Laurier cabinet died at 11 25 this morning after a hospital operation. Doctors earlier said life was declining and heart failure was the immediate cause of death with Lady Cartwright and family at his bedside.
A mass meeting heard the committee report on negotiations with the Canadian Collieries and the U M W of A. A ballot for employees was proposed with 24 hours notice, but the returning officer did not conduct it. The company began eviction notices for workers in West Cumberland and No 7 housing as tensions rise.
A delegation of United Mine Workers visited Premier McBride to press a complaint that Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd violated the Coal Mines Regulation Act by discharging Mottishaw and Smith after they reported concerns. The Premier said no grounds justified an enquiry. miners insist reinstatement is needed.
The Comox Agricultural and Industrial Association held a successful Courtenay fair with record gate receipts. Exhibits wowed attendees including a seven foot high Billion Dollar Fodder Grass and Hornby Island pumpkins of ninety five pounds. Sports impressed. detailed report deferred to next issue.
Correspondence from the Islander about Mrs. Logan widow of a miner killed in the mines. The Cumberland News reported she had been refused compensation but the letter says the payment is in the company’s office awaiting acceptance or rejection under U M W of A guidance. It argues the company aims to delay via relatives and notes legal counsel involvement.
Albert Carigan and Jean Walker were married Wednesday evening at the Presbyterian Manse at 7:80 with Alec Hollands supporting the groom and Marion Walker as bridesmaid. Rev. Jas Hood officiated.
