Miners seek protection after Cumberland discrimination case

Union Officials Turned Down in Nanaimo Meeting

Local union leaders traveled to Nanaimo last Wednesday to seek support from the United Mine Workers or to persuade Cumberland and Smith miners to quit work. Nanaimo miners rejected the proposition entirely, choosing to stay with current conditions. F H Shepherd MPP John Place MPP and Parker William MPP are mediating with miners' representatives to pursue a settlement soon.

Canadian Bank of Commerce Cumberland Chief to Resume

W T Whyte manager of the Canadian Bank of Commerce at Cumberland will resume his duties on Wednesday next. JR Lockhart senior superintendent for the Canadian Collieries Dunsmuir Ltd returned from a Victoria visit Sunday morning. Mrs John J Wier with her daughter Mrs Forsyth returned to Cumberland by Thursday evening's train. Harvest anniversary services are set for Grace Methodist Church tomorrow with Rev. Mr Reid of the Canadian Bible Society preaching in the morning and the choir to render special music in the evening. Rev F Vey from Australia will conduct Holy Trinity Church Cumberland tomorrow at 7 pm. Messrs Newbury and Ashley Vancouver contractors have started excavating for the basement of the new Cumberland school building 96 by 54 feet four rooms basement 8 ft high modern in details adjoining the public school.
