On Saturday the senior footballers played a practice game with the B team emerging victorious 8 goals to 1 in 20 minutes of the second half. The match, held before a small crowd, was arranged to ready players for the first league game against Ladysmith.
The Cumberland City Council reported a deadly gas explosion at No 4 Comox mine Twenty East level. Dead include R K Dunsie John Gibson John Johnston and several Japanese and Chinese workers. Survivors were treated on site and hospitalized. coroner’s inquest set for Sept 8 and regional condolences extended.
In the Cumberland Tennis Club event Bryan and Campbell defeated Christie and Walton 3 6 6 2 6 2 in the mixed doubles semifinal. Miss O Bickle won the Ladies singles final against Mrs Christie 6 2 6 0. One or two games remain with completion expected this weekend.
The W E A hosts a whist drive and dance in the G W V A Hall on Monday September 11. Admission costs 60c for gentlemen and 2c for ladies. The whist drive begins at 8 p.m.
A local group led by Rev G B Kenny started August 16 from Comox Lake to scale the glacier. The party, including J Tremlett H Banks and Arthur McNiven, carried 60 lb packs and faced hard going but reached the summit on Friday. They found lakes tinted by glacial action and noted abundant game in the area.
Due to heavy coal demand mines must start on Monday to supply immediate needs. The C. P. R. is their largest customer and will switch to other suppliers or oil if coal cannot be provided. Employees are urged to report for work Monday morning to help save the business.
Courtenay Milkmen blanked Cumberland 9-2 in an exhibition game last Sunday. Courtenay pitcher Larson delivered his steady effort with strong support while Cumberland used a reshuffled lineup and miscues aided the home team. King relieved on the mound as Conti filled short, and Matt Stewart patrolled center, but Cumberland’s late rally fell short.

A party hiking over mountain peaks found no prior tracks on the glacier. They left a conquest record at the summit and headed home via Battles Lake, arriving in Cumberland on Saturday after an exciting outing.
