The Dictator arrives at the Tro-Ilo Theatre as a Paramount feature with Wallace Reid in the lead. The drama centers on volatile Latin American life, adapted by Walter Woods for the screen. Extra attractions include A Guilty Course and three reels of comedy.
Roy Stewart stars with Louise Lovely in The Heart of the North a drama set in the Far North where snow ice and lawless men test the brave. The Ilo-Ilo Theatre presents two showings Monday and Tuesday with weekly performances to follow.
Mesare, Mumford and Walton grocers and the Royal Candy Store paint and spruce shops. The passage urges other storekeepers to follow suit to improve Dunsmuir Avenue’s appearance.
The Rebekahs announce a Whist Drive and Dance at the G. W. V. A. Hall on September 20 to mark their 71st anniversary. Whist from 8 to 9 30 and dance from 10 to 1. Refreshments provided. Gents 75 cents Ladies 50 cents.
Arrangements for Labor Day events are underway with a large varied sports program for children of all ages. Secretary Nat Bevis reports strong progress and a gratifying response to the appeal for funds.

In a tense Cumberland Tennis Club ladies singles semi final Miss Bickle outlasted Miss Brown 9-7 6-3 after a deeply fought match. Bickle showed versatile court play while Brown rallied with powerful returns and long rallies. The match featured numerous deuce games and high level shot making.
The 1921 summary of the Geological Survey covers investigations across the Mayo district Yukon and coastal British Columbia. Drs Cockfield Hanson Dolmage Mackenzie and others report on placer and copper deposits, North Thompson River vales, Barkerville area and Lardeen region with access through the Director in Ottawa or Pacific Building Vancouver.
James Grant Lockhart aged 24 died August 19 at Shaughnessy Military Hospital Vancouver after service overseas in 1918 19 and return to work for Canadian Collieries Dunsmuir. Funeral in Cumberland with Great War Veterans Association rites and honored by local organizations and veterans.
The Comox Agricultural and Industrial Association hosts the 1922 Fall Fair on September 5 and 6 at the Agricultural Hall and grounds. Officials led by secretary A Hope Herd and P Leo Anderton are promoting exhibits, contests, and a concert lineup with the Dominion Experimental Farm displays, stock judging, and a Courtenay concert troupe. The Hon John Hart will open the fair at 1 pm on September 6, with general admission 60 cents and children 10 cents. Dr R P Christie and Mrs Christie traveled to Victoria recently.
Labor Day Sports Committee schedules a meeting at Cumberland Literary and Athletic Club Hall on Monday evening August 28 at 7 30. Junior football players are urged to submit names to N Bevis secretary of the Cumberland Juniors to join the club next season. Two five aside teams will be chosen for the Labor Day competition. Names must be in by Wednesday August 30. Uniforms will be supplied to those selected. Miss Brown, matron of Cumberland Hospital, leaves for Vancouver. Frank Dalby, store keeper at Canadian Collieries, on a week’s vacation at Royston.
Mr. James T. Brown, owner of the tobacco shop, will post Old Country football results in his store every Saturday. Local fans may check how their teams are faring by visiting Brown's shop on weekend evenings.
The Canadian Fisheries Dept released six captured Japanese fishing boats on Aug 12 after nominal payments covering costs. Seven more remain held. A returning owner spoke angrily as other incidents of defiance by Japanese crews were noted, including dangerous nighttime maneuvers in Alberni Canal and Barclay Sound.
An exhibition match between Cumberland United Club teams A and B is set for Saturday at 5:30 pm on the Recreation Grounds Cumberland. Both sides feature most of last year's players with a couple of new additions and free admission. Team rosters include A: Boyd Stewart Campbell Brewster Kenny Conti Bannerman Milligan Hitchens Appleby Morne and B: King Morimer Monahan Newman Paulos Wier Patterson Plump James Harrison Boothiman.
Mr and Mrs William Davidson of Victoria arrived on Sunday and are the guests of Mr and Mrs Thomas Graham.
Mr Charles Nash married Miss Grace Watson at St. George's Presbyterian Church on Wednesday morning. The ceremony featured the wedding march, a bridal party led by Miss Hilda Watson, and a reception at the bride’s home. The couple left for Vancouver for their honeymoon.
Donald Campbell, proprietor of Campbell's Meat Market in Cumberland, was laid to rest at Sandwich Presbyterian Cemetery with Rev. W T Beattie officiating. Survivors include his widow and brothers Alexander and William, and sister Miss Campbell. Pallbearers were W J Harrigan Thos Pearce W K Swan C Glenn D R MacDonald and A W Rigler.
The Cumberland United Football Club held an Aug 20 meeting at the Athletic Club to elect officers for the coming season. Jas L Brown chaired. Officers elected include honorary president James M Savage and president Charles Graham with James Lown as vice-president and Robert Strachan as secretary treasurer.
Space pressure delays publish of Labor Day Celebration sports programme and the donations net. Taxpayer’s letter and the poem Remembrance by an unknown author are also postponed.
