Stanley Bevis, driving on Comox Road near Nanaimo Foundry, swerved to avoid a dog and struck it. He then ran off the embankment, the car dropping about ten feet and badly wrecked, but Bevis and his companion escaped unharmed.
Mrs. G. J. Richardson lent her home for a Women's Auxiliary event at Holy Trinity Church on Wednesday. The silver tea and evening bridge and whist raised a substantial sum for the church kitchen fund. Winners included Miss Ivinson, Mrs. Finch, Mr. R. Shaw, and Mr. Mumford in bridge. Mrs. J. Devlin, Mrs. B. Nunns, and Mr. G. Apps in whist.
Princess Patricia resumed the Vancouver to Nanaimo service at 9 a.m. under Captain Sterner. The ship’s new turbine engine, a long planned British project, proved a triumph as it ran smoothly after installation. Coast circles praised the vessel’s performance and the builders’ twenty five year effort.
Reno Galliazi was admitted to Cumberland General Hospital after being crushed between two coal cars at No 4 Mine. He is in shock with severe bruises but the injuries are not considered serious and he is progressing as well as can be expected.
A Cumberland resident received a letter on Monday evening January 23 after another Victoria date of January 11. The letter bears only two date marks Victoria and January 28, raising questions where the delay occurred. The sender seeks Victoria authorities to investigate the unusual twelve day transit.
The Cumberland Welsh Society hosted a social at the Anglican Church Hall honoring Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Williams and Mr. and Mrs. George Hunden. About 75 attendees enjoyed cards, a Welsh supper, a bed lounge gift, songs, sketches, solos, and dancing, with a midnight farewell.
At the first 1928 meeting the Courtenay City Council presented F C Brock with 100 for fourteen years of service as manager of the Courtenay BoC branch. Committees were named with Aldermen Pearse, MacDonald, Wallis, Douglas and others assigned to Finance Works Electric Light Fire Better Housing and Sanitary duties.
A Parent Teachers Association gathering is set for Monday evening January 20 at 7 30 PM in the school. Rev F W Cassilis Kennedy Superintendent of Oriental Missions in British Columbia will be the guest speaker.
The Burns Banquet at War Veterans Hall drew ninety attendees with a Scottish themed program. Speakers praised Burns as Scotland's greatest poet and discussed his universal brotherhood and ties to Canada. A banquet included toasts to Burns Bonnie Jean and the Motherland with songs and performances.
Brown a well known local hunter bagged a large Cougar near the Trent river this week, his second in quick succession. The mounted skin was displayed at Matt Brown’s Grocery, drawing much attention as a possible mate is still believed to be in the district.
A special meeting established the 1928 officers and committees led by Chairman Mrs. T. H. Banks and Secretary Mr. A. McKinnon. The board received a $10 grant for science equipment, considered Miss Jessie Baird as a teaching applicant, and approved purchase of desks and hot plates for the domestic science room. Estimated annual expenditure totals about $31,000.
Vancouver reports total BC salmon pack for 1927 at 1 360 684 cases a drop from 2 065 190 in 1926. Vancouver Island district leads with 377 800 cases, Fraser River 280 041, Skeena district declines to 187 716. Outlying districts fall sharply with 267 029 packed in 1927 down from over 46 000 in 1926. Naas River Rivers Inlet Queen Charlotte Seles and Smith Inlet show mixed results.
Under Harmony Rebekah Lodge No. 22 an enjoyable whist drive was held at Mrs Marion Stewart’s Allan avenue home on Monday evening. More than thirty Rebekahs and friends attended. Dainty refreshments were served and prizes awarded to Mrs Hutchinson for whist and Mrs Lockhart also won the drawing prize.
The four room Courtenay high school completed with bold Harrison High School above the entrance honors Cumberland man P. P. Harrison provincial legislator. Pupils expected to move in next week with staff W. A. McInnis H. L. Buckley and H. D. Wallis graduates of UBC.
Cumberland Pioneers announce their annual reunion will be open to the public on February 1. City Hall hosts a Saturday meeting led by Mayor Maxwell with plans for complimentary tickets for long-term residents and detailed committee assignments for hall music refreshments reception and invitations.
The Weiner 500 drive under Cumberland Welsh Society was held Monday evening in the War Veterans Hall. Thirteen tables played 500 with prizes to Mrs. Gear first, Mrs. Conti second, Mrs. William McLellan consolation, Mr. Hunt first, Miss Shepperd substitute second, and Mrs. W. Davis consolation. A novelty weiner supper was enjoyed by all.
Guido Groeks a 23 year old German exponent of the simple life roamed Windsor Station in velveteen jacket shorts and bare knees awaiting a train to British Columbia. He will join eleven others in Penticton in February to operate the farm as a community venture.
