The Cumberland General Hospital held its annual meeting at City Hall with A J Taylor in the chair. Officers mostly present, Pickard absent sick but later reported able. Minutes and financials adopted, president’s report approved, board re elected, Brown to replace Hughes. Building upgrades cited, hospital praised as among province’s best.

Dr. Wade Delivers Interesting Talk on McKenzie’s Life

Ottawa reports A W Neill independent MP for Comox Alberni has a motion on the notice paper urging BC coal mines expansion. The resolution proposes testing pulverized coal on a Pacific Coast government steamer and in a public building furnace using Vancouver Island Mines coal.

Imperials Suffer Defeat in Nanaimo Badminton Return

The Imperial players traveled to Nanaimo for a series of return games against the Hub city team. Substitutes filled in due to player absences and the locals won many close matches, with losses attributed mainly to lighting issues. Parksville and Cumberland players are slated to visit the Imperial Pavilion in coming days, promising more competitive badminton.

Council Seeks Buyout Price for Light Plant

Cumberland City Council, after a committee interview with the Cumberland Light Company, votes the price on the company’s plant and urges a quick assessment. The Light Company offered a rate cut from 13 to 12 cents per kWh with a 5 percent discount, not accepted as insufficient. The council directs notice to set a price on the plant for potential purchase by the city.

Rev F W Cassilis Kennedy of Vancouver spoke to the Cumberland P T A on The Origin Of The Japanese. He explored migrations to Japan, noted the beauty of Japanese scenery, and urged kinder treatment of Orientals in Canada while praising Japan’s education system and culture.

Masonic Lodges Stage Brilliant Combined Dance

The Cyrus Royal Arch Chapter and Cumberland Lodge No 26 A F and AM held a joint ball at Ilo Ilo Hall on Friday evening. The Canary Club six piece orchestra provided music, Royal Confectionery served refreshments, and attendees praised it as the jolliest, most marked affair in a long time.

Cumberland Pioneers Re Union Draws Large Crowd

The Ilo Ilo Ballroom hosted Cumberland and district pioneers for an open public reunion. About 400 attended, including visitors from Cedar District Nanaimo, with Buck Gibson entertaining and the Canary Club orchestra providing music until 2 am.

Departing resident honored at farewell party

A farewell party at Mrs. James Walker’s home honored Mrs. Chris Edwards who left for Britain with her husband. Mesdames Walker Marshall Murray and Beveridge hosted a card and guessing contest evening for about forty friends, presenting a silver purse to Mrs. Edwards.
