The Northwestern Bell Telephone Co will discontinue local Cherokee service after Sept. 17 following an Iowa Supreme Court decision and failed franchise election. Toll service will continue. Petitions circulating urge a council appeal to seek a stay through the Supreme Court.
Sioux City shows a strong autumn outlook with a large rise in livestock receipts, bank clearings and debits, postal receipts and building permits. Hog market receipts exceed 3.0 million with hog value up from 1924, while seven month totals surpass 1924 by about 31.5 million.
Illinois holds the nation’s most complete set of governor portraits valued around 50 000 dollars with Works by Healy and others. Governor Shelby M. Grundy Center Iowa Sept 4 All residents who attended the Grundy county fair for the past 49 of 50 years will receive badges this year. Secretary J Vanderwicken notes some may have attended every fair since its 50 year inception. Dates for the county fair are Sept 8 9 and 10.
Cedar Rapids reports a very bright autumn business outlook with bank clearings and deposits up by 63 million dollars for the year over last year. C P Streeter cites a corn crop surpassing five year harvests, oats above expectations, and rising butterfat in dairy. July building permits rose by 139 thousand and more than 2.5 million in new structures are planned. Roads in Linn county are being improved to year round operation to spur traffic and transport bumper crops.
A three year old girl from Pront homme Sask reportedly cured after nine days of prayer at the Wa kaw shrine to St Theresa of Lisieux in France. The physician attending Colin LePage’s family confirmed the cure occurred on the ninth day after the family prayed at the shrine and later returned to offer thanks.
For the first time Soviet Russia will be represented at the Danzig Autumn Fair from September 24 to 27. Russians will display industrial products in twelve sections.
Des Moines reports field work resumed June 1 to curb barberry bushes linked to wheat rust. Six men surveyed along the Mississippi bluff near Sabula, finding many bushes and seedlings. By July 1 crews expanded to Jones Cass Audubon Harrison counties, locating 6500 bushes and 6000 seedlings. United States Department of Agriculture will resume limited work this fall and next summer, with radio aiding outreach and property-owner cooperation lauded as key to detecting infestations.
Davenport September 4 Coach Forrest Cotton will lead St. Ambrose college football into practice on September 8 with an experienced squad. Of last year’s 17 lettermen only five depart, retaining core players including captain Allan Sheahen who returns after a four year stint and substantial conditioning.
Tama September 4 The twelfth Mesquakie Indian pow wow will feature judging of the farms where the Indians live. Jurors include Mark Thornburg secretary of agriculture John Wallace of Wallaces Farmers and State Senator Harry White. Speakers include Edgar R Harlan Vernon Sechurger Governor John Hammill Harvey Ingham and Harry H Woodson.
