London May 22 The A P reports Dr Cecil Webb Johnson a leading diet and obesity specialist warns in Women and Beauty that tobacco harms female daintiness and health. He says women and men struggle with moderation and that many women smokers lack self control, risking beauty and well being.
The doctor asserts excessive smoking in women leads to undernourishment, sunken eyes, and yellowish skin. He adds smoke-dried throats cause false thirst and overconsumption of liquids and often trigger an alcohol habit.
Two Amundsen Erickson sea planes began from Kings Bay Spitzbergen at 5 45 pm for a north pole flight. They expect a 9 hour flight covering about 1100 kilometers with return to Spitzbergen in 24 hours.
Berlin May 22 The long dispute between German theater producers and stars ends with the removal of rigid classed pay scales. Actors may set terms per engagement but any higher claim must be approved by a three man arbitration board. The move preserves pride but may hurt earnings for prominent performers.
The thirtieth convention of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen opens June 1 in Detroit, with 920 subordinate lodges and 115000 members represented. May 22 Bellingham Washington reports Whatcom County remains a largely unexplored frontier about 50 miles east of Bellingham. The 200 square mile district between Sourdough Mountain and Mount Baker/Shukusen features dense forests and high elevations. Rangers note impenetrable terrain with glaciers and abundant wildlife while questioning access for pack animals. Two thirds of the county lies in a forest reserve and less than a third has been surveyed.
Oxford England May 22. The college town endures a clothes slump as student spending falls. Three long established tailor firms, in business for nearly fifty years, have gone out of business claiming lack of customers. Students buy fewer garments, favor knickerbockers and one or two suits per season, unable to afford multiple outfits as before the war.
