Charles C. Faiman, once a chief prosecution witness under guard, testified in the Shepherd murder trial. He described dealings with Shepherd, including discussions of bacteriology and the use of germs, and cited offers of money tied to alleged plans involving typhoid and tuberculosis germs.
Chicago June 18 Judge Thomas A Lynch ordered Charles J Fairman called as a court witness in the Shepherd murder case. He will be interrogated on direct evidence and then both sides may cross examine. State's Attorney Robert Crowe had urged not to call Fairman arguing he could not be vouched for. The defense accused the move of widening cross examination beyond direct questioning.

Negotiations in Shanghai between foreign diplomatic corps representatives at Peking and Chinese delegates seeking settlement of recent disturbances were broken off due to divergences in views.
London officials say no confirmation yet that negotiations in Shanghai over riot-related disputes have broken down. If true, serious complications may follow and could affect ongoing negotiations and communications at Peking.
A wireless message from Chung-Kiang reports a critical situation in Shanghai. The Bri teh consul fled the consulate and took residence in the Lingman temple as British nationals were stoned and assaulted in the streets.
Chung-Kiang is described as a treaty port with a population between 250 000 and 300 000. It lies about 830 miles above Hankow at the confluence of the Kia Ling with the Yangtse River.
More than 400 women attended the Wednesday session of the gold medal cooking school led by Mrs. Marjorie Child Evans in the skating rink. Vern Burns was arraigned in justice court this morning on charges of assault and battery from an incident with 14 year old Bertha Roach of 500 South Poplar Street. The hearing was set for 9 o clock Saturday. Roach says Burns met her near Rainbow Park yesterday afternoon, seized her, held her hands behind her back and kissed her neck, leaving marks on neck and arms.

After a three hour trial W B Ling was found guilty of vagrancy in mayor s court and sentenced to ten days in county jail. He appealed, posted bond, and was then served with a bootlegging warrant with a hearing set for 2 o clock. Ling bound over to Union county grand jury in August term.

Mrs Lydia H Colburn of Creston died at 10 45 PM Wednesday at 905 West Mills after a illness of several months. She was born September 18 1848 in Yorkville and was 76. She came to Creston in 1888. Her husband died in 1919. Survived by Frank of Mount Harris Colorado and Howard at home. Funeral at St Pauls Episcopal Church Friday at 3 PM with Rev Edward Hutchinson. Burial in Burlington Saturday.
