Denison Ia June 6 reports that Clarence Chamberlin landed in Germany after a long wait and a false Berlin sighting. Father and mother Chamberlin plan a Denison welcome as locals declare a holiday and prepare a big homecoming for the celebrated aviator.
The Creston municipal band directed by Charles A. Hayden opened the summer concert season in Mc Kinley Park on Sunday afternoon. Similar Sunday programs will run all summer. Mayor George D. Newcomb noted the band is financed by a municipal tax voted by residents, calling it the community’s band.
Fire department responded to a shingle fire at the D Eastman residence 309 South Maple street yesterday afternoon with minimal damage. Nearby, Herman Rudiger of the stockyards road two miles east of Creston is bedridden from a sinus infection. E F Buhlman of Centerville arrived for a Creston office visit, while Howard White of Kent is seriously ill and may need hospital care. T E York, Harry Coen and Guy Williams left for Vermilion Minnesota for a week long automobile camping trip.
The Bellanca Columbia passed within twelve miles of the U S S Memphis during Lindberghs trans Atlantic flight drawing cheers from the crew and Lindberghs arrival prep for a homecoming. He spent a quiet day aboard reading newspapers attending services and watching the sea while a 36 mile head wind delayed progress.
Relatives and friends gathered at the Williamson home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Blazek to honor his seventy-first birthday with a surprise party. Dinner was cafeteria style and attendees included numerous Cres ton and Prescott area relatives, who presented a birthday gift before departure.
J H Gillespie of 503 West Montgomery Street left Saturday for Los Angeles to visit his son and daughter in law Ralph and Jacque line Logan motion picture star. He will travel via Santa Fe New Mexico to attend James Brady ordination for the priesthood. Brady will return with his father to Creston for James first Solemn High Mass June 19 at Immaculate Conception Church.
Creston reports 276 students enrolled in Iowa summer classes run by the State Teachers College. Two hundred sixty four started the first day, with a goal of 300 as inquiries continue. George DeWolf and Ella Day praised local support from the city and Chamber of Commerce.
Mayor George D. Newcomb urged summer school students to feel at home in Creston. He highlighted the city's friendly reputation and asked residents and merchants to help welcome visitors and use McKinley Park for leisure.
A general committee in Creston with six groups including Kiwanis Rotary United Clubs American Legion and city park commission is formulating Fourth of July plans. Ray Emerson chairs the committee with Lloyd Kenney secretary and Dale Ellis treasurer. Plans include band concerts fireworks baseball parade games contests and a six hundred dollar fireworks display at McKinley Park. Chamber of Commerce directors were asked to endorse and appoint a coordinating committee.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy H. Youngren of 103 North Sumner avenue departed for a trip to Detroit and Niagara Falls. Mrs. J. R. Hawkins and daughter Miss Marion left Sunday evening for Billings Montana to visit Mrs. Hawkins' son W. J. Hawkins and family.
Rev C W Graham pastor of the Methodist church led the devotional this morning. Members of the Ministerial Alliance will serve at future chapel sessions.
A Creston summer school enrolment check shows students from every section of southwestern Iowa with several communities well represented. Notable long-distance travelers include Miss Sophia Standfield of Sigourney and Miss Gladys Lindsley of Columbus Nebraska.
Mrs C W Graham will leave Tuesday from 317 North Jarvis street for Omaha to visit Woodmen Circle headquarters en route to Los Angeles as a national convention delegate. About 250 national delegates will depart Omaha June 8 on two special trains with dinners theater trips and a dinner dance across Colorado and Salt Lake City. The California meeting will feature an all states banquet with each state decorating its table with flag and flower.
Louise Miller, 14, daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank E Miller living east of Creston, was badly burned on the legs today by hot washing water. She was taken to Creston for medical care, but the physician said the burns were not serious.
Specialists directing the extension summer school list the faculty led by N. H Ringstrom. Faculty include Genevieve Anderson of Des Moines in primary methods, Glen Blakkum of Ithaca in rural sociology, Jean Gleaves of Fremont in handwork, Martha Gilbert of Iona Falls in music and penmanship, Jessie Lawson of Creston in rural school work, G. I. McDowell of Afton in type writing and US economic history, Dorothy McKeon Schmidt of Waterloo in physical training, John Slocum of Clarinda in science and physical training for men, Fred W. Vorhees of Colfax in dietetics, W. A. Thulman of Iona Falls in psychology, Alice Thayer of Atlantic in arithmetic education, and W. J. Yourd of Clinton in American government and Ringstrom in American history.
Two Creston railroad shopmen were hospitalized with knife wounds after an incident at 207 South Peterson Avenue. Daniel Smith, about 40, a traveling salesman, was held on bond for assault with intent to injure. Smith found the men with his wife and two roomers, the Wooldridge sisters, at the time. One victim suffered a lung and spleen injury. the other had deep but superficial wounds. Smith waived to the grand jury after arraignment.
Crestmoor Golf Club reports a cabaret dance at the club house last week cleared more than $150 for club purposes. Entertainment included a cabaret and vaudeville with music by Bert Brown's Violin. Miss Boas Jeffrey served as general chairperson.
L. L. Olson of Creston received word Saturday that his sister Mrs. Ellen Walgreen died at her Dixon home. Aged 87 she had visited Creston often. Surviving are Olson and two sisters Mrs. Kate Peterson of Minnvis and Mrs. Martha Clements of California.
Mr and Mrs T D Gaddis of Corning spent Sunday in the city with relatives and friends enjoying the visit and local hospitality.
An American air team completes a second transatlantic crossing in a fortnight, piloted by Clarence D. Chamberlin with Charles A. Levine, landing in Einleben Saxony after fuel runs low, then attempting Berlin but forced to land in a marshy field near Klinge Brandenburg due to weather.
