Eleven indictments returned by the grand jury against W. E. Pierson former cashier of State Savings bank of Afton who closed in 1924. Charges include embezzlement fraudulent banking and making false reports to the state superintendent of banking. Pierson is at liberty on $9,000 bond.
President Coolidge signs the naval appropriation bill amid a request for another arms conference. Rep Hull of Iowa opposes embracing the conference report of the Underwood bill on Muscle Shoals. The House commerce committee declines to report the Goodin bill barring higher rail freight for short hauls over long hauls.
The American Federation of Labor will push a national child labor amendment in states that have not ratified it until legislatures favorable to ratification are elected. The decision was made by the federation's executive council at its Miami meeting on February 11.
H A Hainline of Orient received word that his brother C F Hainline died in Alma Michigan Saturday afternoon at 2 30 after an illness of a year Dropsy was the cause. He resided near Creston and had many friends here. The funeral and burial were held Tuesday afternoon in Alma Michigan.
Chicago reports a sharp fall in grain prices as heavy selling of corn and oats drives the market lower. Wheat for May delivery slipped to 1.77 and was about six cents below yesterday's low.
Cedar Rapids Iowa Feb 11 Alice Franks three year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Carl Franks was burned to death this afternoon while alone at home. The child picked up a piece of paper lit the stove and her dress took fire. She died shortly after.
Mason City Iowa Feb 11 with nearly 300 delegates from the Northwest Iowa Lumbermen's and Central and Northeastern Iowa Lumbermen's associations opening their annual conventions at the Hanford hotel. Mayor L L Forbes welcomed the delegates and tied lumber history to U S colonization. Officers spoke and committees were appointed to conduct the session.
Des Moines February reflects a suit by Attorney General Ben J. Gibson for recovery of state funds tied to three bank closings. He sues all stockholders of the United State bank Commercial Savings bank and Mechanics Savings bank to cover losses to depositors and reimburse private depositors. Each bank faces specific capital assessments totaling two hundred thousand dollars for United State and Commercial Savings and one hundred thousand for Mechanics. Receiverships are active as the United State bank closed earlier this winter and the others followed in January for failure to provide surety for public money.
Bert Hazelton proprietor of the Acme Locomotive works escaped by chopping a floor opening and leaping from a third story window after being trapped on the fourth floor of a seven story State street building in the department store zone. Building damage exceeds 200000 dollars as fire attorneys plan to investigate the cause.
Detroit Feb 11 Edsel B Ford announced Ford Motor will enter trans Atlantic shipping to move auto parts to foreign plants. The company bought the steamer East Indiana from the emergency fleet corporation as the first large unit in the proposed foreign service fleet.

William Hattanschwiller age 20 pleaded guilty to auto theft in district court. Judge D W Jackson imposed an indeterminate sentence not to exceed 10 years in the Anamosa reform school and paroled him to H E Kroeger of Burlington, with supporting testimony from the boy's father and two other Burlington men.

Dora Atkins 16 and Bethel Rhodes 17 of Merino Colorado were taken from a Northwestern train in Cedar Rapids Iowa by police. They admitted their identities and were held pending word from parents after running away Monday en route to Leroy Indiana to visit an Atkins uncle.

Des Moines report says William Shaw was shot and seriously wounded when a lone gunman entered Frank H. Johnson's lunch room to rob it. Johnson drew a revolver and fired, wounding the bandit. A second bandit stationed outside returned fire. Shaw was believed wounded by the gunfire.
