An American air corps team led by Lieutenants Smith and Nelson completed a flight from Reykjavik to Frederiksdal Greenland arriving last night. The group passed several U S ships on schedule in favorable weather before mist and rain near Cape Farewell. Locatelli, who joined from Pisa, flew a faster plane and led briefly ahead of the others.
Weather aboard the United States destroyer Barry reported favorable conditions for the Iceland to Greenland leg of the round the world flight with good visibility and a helping wind. As the flyers approached Cape Fraewell they encountered mist and drizzling rain reducing visibility.
Rear Admiral Thomas P. Magruder orders the U S cruisers Richmond Raleigh and the destroyer Barry to search east of Cape Farewell Greenland for Lieutenant Locatelli the Italian aviator who accompanied the American round the world flyers The operation uses scout planes and will continue indefinitely as a general alarm is prepared if Locatelli is not found soon.
Washington officials and the army await official word on the safety of American round the world flyers after their 825 mile Iceland hop to Greenland. Officers watched all night for a direct message from the aviators but none arrived by 6 a m. Reports from Halifax last night spoke of their arrival, though direct Arctic communications have been delayed.
Wireless reports say the Lawrence bound world flyers will press from Frederiksdal to Ivigtut on Greenland’s west coast tomorrow and then depart Ivigtut for Indian Harbor on Sunday. Lieuts Smith and Nelson reached Frederiksdal in fog. Locatelli’s status is unknown.
Morgan Sheely, 84, seeks divorce from Lillin Richardson Sheely in Cedar Rapids district court alleging cruel and inhuman treatment after she demanded payment for kisses rising from 5 to 10 dollars. He cites robberies of wealth spent on clothes and hints of a marriage for money.
Ackley Iowa reports a two hour rainfall washing out 1300 feet of track on the Minneapolis and St. Louis line between Ackley and Abbott five miles south. The storms began at 4 30 pm and 8 15 pm with strong winds felling trees and damaging telephone lines. railroad traffic is blocked until repairs are completed.
Chicago August 22 Curtis D Wilbur secretary of the navy was scheduled to arrive for an inspection tour that will cover the Pacific coast and run to September 28. Today's program includes an official visit at the Great Lakes naval training station before he departs tonight for Des Moines.
Des Moines reports Secretary of the Navy Wilbur will arrive at 8 10 tomorrow morning. He will spend the day in Des Moines and motor to Boone to visit his birthplace over Sunday.
Boone hosts its famed son Wilbur secretary of the navy for a rally in Lincoln Hall tomorrow night. He will spend Sunday visiting friends before departing Sunday evening for St Paul via Marshalltown.
Plymouth Vermont August 22. President Coolidge rests after a week in seclusion at his father’s home. He has walked, slept well, visited boyhood haunts, and welcomed newsmen. He plans speaking engagements and keeps a lighter public schedule while cooling weather aids his rest.
A plane was heard flying north of Frederiksdal by the Danish steamship Ishlands Falk as TOR, flying from Reykjavik with the Americans, was reported in the area.
Washington August 22 The cruiser Richmond relayed word that no signal had come from Italian aviator Lieut Locatelli as the airmen neared the lower tip of Greenland Ivigtut The message suggested dense weather might delay the next hop across the North Atlantic delaying the route plan.
Clarence Darrow told Judge Caverly that money was the defense’s main handicap and that public demand for blood fueled prejudice. He argued the Franks murder was not the most cruel Illinois crime and urged saving the defendants’ lives.
Chicago dispatch reports riot calls to police as crowds jammed corridors to reach Judge John R. Caverly for Clarence Darrow's mercy plea in the Leopold and Loeb case. Deputies struggled to control the mob, injures were noted, and the start of Darrow's address was delayed before visitors were expelled. A press member crestfallenly slipped in amid laughter as the scene dissolved into farce.
Chicago Aug 22 Walter Bachrach defense attorney argued Leopold and Loeb show paranoid personalities in attempt to spare them from the gallows. He contended alienists had limited study and biased observations and cited Dr Hugh Patrick and Singer Krohn works to claim paranoid symptoms were present. He noted Loeb’s faulty premises and Leopold's grandiose delusions.
A crowd of boys threw stones at what they believed was a cat head near a chautauqua tent in Silver City. The object proved to be Andy Reynolds lying on the grass. a stone cut away half his nose and doctors could not recover the severed portion.
Saturday listings show world war veterans day Des Moines day and Baby Beef day at the State Fair. Events include judging of baby beefs lambs and various departments plus home economics demonstrations art lectures and Red Cross displays. Evening entertainment features fireworks and music.
Cedar Rapids Aug 22 Frank Vopalka 16 escaped from St. Charles Illinois boys school more than a year ago and was captured this morning after a fast chase. Police surrounded his mother's house and a detective chased him to the back yard. He pleaded not to be sent back. Vopalka had been convicted at Dixon Illinois for auto theft and escaped soon after.
In Lemberg Poland on August 22 a young cripple shot himself dead at a meeting during a protest speech against the Polish government neglect of war invalids. The act occurred before listeners could interfere, marking a dramatic close to the speech.
The statement notes that a paranoiac may see himself as equal to kings, Napoleons, Christ, or God. It argues that acting as if in that exalted sphere serves as evidence of paranoiac personality. The remark attributes these views to Mr. Bachrach.
Seagirt New Jersey August 22 John W Davis Democratic candidate argues in address that President Coolidge failed to confront corruption in public office. He cites oil veterans bureau and prohibition scandals and says Republicans must share responsibility for acts of high officers. Davis calls for open government, candor, and direct handling of public funds with equal treatment of all regions.
London August 22 The Prince of Wales has packed and will board the Berengaria for a second U S visit. Debutantes hurry home to catch the liner as its 700-saloon capacity fills with hopeful American guests.
Des Moines reports a car crash with a Rock Island passenger train near Summerset Junction injuring seven people. Among the seriously hurt are Mrs Elizabeth Compton and her son Harry Compton, both of Mason City, plus Mrs Agnes Compton and Mrs Della Duding of Alva Oklahoma. The car was demolished and the train held for repairs while rescuers transported the injured to a Des Moines hospital.
Creston Tennis club to meet at Chamber of Commerce rooms at 8 15 tonight to finalize plans for the annual club tournament starting next Monday August 25. Members divided into two groups A and B with separate tournaments. first round singles draw already made and doubles draw set for next Tuesday night August 26. All members expected to attend and compete unless out of town. no entrance fee for players or spectators. Further details and results to appear in later issues of the Advertiser.
The Arlington Place at 600 West Adams Street was sold to F. R. Johnson, a retund farmer of Adams county. The property recently traded for $11,500. the deal was arranged by Hurlburt and Hurlburt.
In Nuremberg Germany Aug 22 statistics show German women vote similarly to men. Among the Reichstag district voters 34.9 percent of men backed the Socialist ticket while women backed 33.8 percent. For the Stresemann party men at 0.5 percent were matched by 0.4 percent of women.
The Creston baseball team beat Clearmont Mo 9 to 4 in the Clarinda tournament. Lewis pitched six innings before Bishop closed out the win. Speer hit a bases loaded three bagger for Clearmont. Creston to face Grant Iowa with potential prize money of 750900. Leon game scheduled Sunday at 3:30 at the fair grounds.
Cincinnati traffic officers are instructed to replace harsh language with courtesy and sell the city politely. Safety Director Wade Tudor urges soft cautions for minor violations and stresses that polite treatment by guards and couriers can turn visitors into promoters of the city.
Dublin August 22 The Free State faces higher living costs than Great Britain or Ulster affecting wages as workers resist cuts until food prices drop. The government plans to curb profiteering by funding organizations to compete with them with bank capital and state guarantees, loans conditioned on selling below average retail prices.
The funeral of Mrs. C. B. McGregor was held this afternoon at 2 o clock at the home on West Adams Street. Rev. W. L. Cain of the Presbyterian church officiated with interment at Graceland Cemetery.
Funeral services for Miss Lucid Otis will be held Saturday at 2 20 PM at the family home in Highland township Burial will be made in Afton cemetery.
