Governor Hammill appointed a 15 member Iowa industrial commission representing industry agriculture and business to seek closer cooperation and place the state on a sound business footing. Members include F F Faville L L OLeary L A Anderson James Stedman J G Mitchell Arthur Huntington Mrs Ellsworth Richardson and others. The governor stressed balancing agriculture with industry to preserve regional prosperity amid rising eastern industrial centralization and tariff concerns.
Des Moines reports Governor Hammill will soon release a plan for an unofficial Iowa Industrial Commission. The body would study agriculture and industry conditions, advise the legislature and state departments, and focus on home markets, tariffs, and fostering local production to reduce foreign dependence.
Nettie Ramsey of Creston filed suit Saturday for divorce from Homer Ramsey alleging cruel and inhuman treatment. They wed May 5, 1914 at Osceola and lived together until April 13, 1925. She seeks custody of three minor children and $25 monthly permanent alimony. Florence Stanger and Rosa Hildebrand, graduates of Greater Community Hospital, left for Des Moines to take state board exams and expect to return midweek.
William D Shepherd, charged with murdering his foster son William Nelson McClintock, who left him a $1,000,000 estate, will be tried May 18 before Janee Lynch. Co defendant Dre C C Faiman failed to appear. state plans separate trials if needed. Mrs. Shepherd visited, weeping, praising his courage and faith in God, as Shepherd remained jailed after bail was denied.
A Des Moines gathering launched plans to establish a central peace organization with a committee to carry out the program. Frederick Libby, executive secretary of the National Council for Prevention of War, urged immediate action as he warned the world may head toward another war. In Washington, Secretary Wilbur informed Libby that part of the U S fleet would cruise to Australia this summer as a routine courtesy visit, noting past visits and Pacific maneuvers.
Floyd Palmer, 24, a workman on the new Skunk River bridge at Rome, was electrocuted yesterday noon while on the bridge at the Big Cedar crossing eight miles southwest of Mount Pleasant. He touched a live wire, fell into Big Cedar creek, and his body had not yet been recovered.
Des Moines authorities ordered an investigation by the city council into a public demonstration last week in which many fiery crosses were set in multiple city locations. The probe will seek who was responsible and address reports that some officers refused to extinguish the fires.
County attorney files resistance to the motion to quash an indictment charging W F Pierson cashier of State Savings bank of Afton with false report to the state banking supervisor. Grand juries in 1924 and 1925 returned multiple indictments. a prior embezzlement acquittal was by directed verdict. The motion seeks to kill 10 remaining true bills by challenging grand jury list changes allegedly including Christina Towne and others. Evidence and arguments were set for Judge Carter at 1:30 PM. jurors were excused to 3:00 PM.
An ambulance carrying Mr and Mrs W C Stederman and child and driver W J Shadduck with Merrill overturned yesterday afternoon when brakes failed on a detour road northwest of Clinton. All occupants suffered only minor injuries. Mrs Tedema and child were being moved from hospital to Goos Lake. The bridge over Mil Creek was washed out last August after heavy storms.
Waterloo April 27 Masonic fraternity and visiting brethren laid the cornerstone of a temple valued at about 500000. E R Moore Cedar Rapids grand master presided with Charles C Hunt Cedar Rapids grand secretary. Other visitors included F G Hanson Clinton deputy grand master H A Benjamin Des Moines committee member and King Slocum Masons Eastern Stars and DeMolay member formed a parade through the business district before the services.
Mrs William Lauer died this morning at 8 o clock at her home 601 Prairie Street after a long illness. She is survived by her husband and three sons. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
Council Bluffs stations reduced gasoline by two cents today. Gasoline now costs 18 cents plus a two cent tax, with most outlets matching the change across the area.
Hartley, cashier at Flynn Dairy, was robbed of 400 dollars in cash and 1200 dollars in checks by bandits this noon near the business district. He and driver George Sawartzel were forced to the curb. Hartley was struck when he refused to hand over the cash.
Mr and Mrs Horace Peters and their four months old baby girl escaped serious injury when their Hecht coupe collided with a second car at Dumphey corner two miles east of Creston. Mrs Peters was thrown unconscious but held the baby. she later regained consciousness. Sheriff Collins investigated. Peters sustained bruises and cuts while the other occupants Mr Bickford and Mr Overholser were unhurt. Several minor crashes occurred the same weekend on Creston streets and county roads.
Floyd Collins the cave explorer who died trapped in Sand cave was buried on a hill above Crystal cave near Cave City Kentucky. His body was recovered after two and a half months trapped in the natural tomb. About 500 people attended the funeral despite rain.
Henry Landt aged 36 of near Andover Indiana was killed at his Clinton Louisiana farm when a horse knocked him down. He and a hired man were chasing horses into the barn when the animal charged. Landt's wife witnessed the fatal accident.
Des Moines reports traces of frost in Forest City Charles City Waterloo Estherville and Spencer as temperatures fell from the 70s to the 40s. The weather bureau expects light frosts in the lowlands again tonight with a 33 degree low in northern sections.
J J Nickle county farm bureau agent reports Union county corn acreage ready for planting far ahead of recent years with a potential 90 percent of acreage in two to three days if farmers hurry. He notes a 10 percent rise in normal acreage as pastures give way to new seeding and that weather will shape the May planting outlook.
Fred Danielson of Creston pleads not guilty to transporting liquor after arraignment before Justice John Carson. Bound over to the grand jury on $200 bond after waiving prelims. Collision on Elm Street and a parked car owned by C W McGregor noted. small quantity of alcohol found in Danielson's car. Danielson had pleaded guilty to intoxication in Mayor Burt's court and was fined $15 plus costs. Another man arrested Sunday also pleaded guilty to intoxication and paid the usual fine.
William Dubin reported a theft Saturday night as an automobile was driven to a side street and stripped of two tires. Sheriff Fred Collings said a search began Saturday night and located the car Sunday morning on Bureau street between Ada and Montgomery. bundles of merchandise remained untouched.
Bernard Krueger, 5, of 907 North Popular Street, fell from his caster wagon while coasting a hill near his home Saturday afternoon and broke his left wrist. He is a pupil at Jefferson School.
Word reached Cres ton via J. M. Seurr of 509 South Park street that S. R. Cotton died at his Vancouver Washington home. Death occurred on April 24. Cotton formerly lived here and was a member of the firm Seurr and Gottay of this city.
