Eleven year old Janie Fariday and fourteen year old George Beatty visited the Advertiser plant to learn news gathering and production. They toured the court police beat then the business district beat, viewing linotype operation and the full printing process under guidance of staff.
In East St Louis on April 18 Christopher Columbus Gwaltney, 32, a plumber, killed Peter Totsch, 56, his employer, and Patrolman David A. Mohler, 53, who tried to intervene. Gwaltney was then killed by Detective Sergeant George Burns. Crowds fled believing a bank robbery occurred. Totsch served as business agent for Plumbers Laborers' Union 62 and had employed Gwaltney.
Mason City April 18 Associated Press C H MacNider president of the First National bank completes six decades of service starting as a 14 year old sweeper messenger boy and bookkeeper. Congratulatory messages include one from President Coolidge. He heads Northwestern States Portland Cement and serves as railroad director and Federal Reserve board member. During the war he led Iowa liberty loan drives. He is father of Hanford MacNider former American Legion commander.
James Murphy of Rock Island Illinois and Arthur B Quick of Davenport Illinois with Mrs Murphy were arrested in Maryville Washington on charges of kidnaping the adopted son of Ellis D Conwell from a primary school yard in Godendale. The boy was reportedly taken from Trout Lake parents had abandoned him. The trio were seized three hours after the disappearance following a tip from Ralph L Mcdonald who owns a local ferry and notified Sheriff Warwick.
New York April 18 Actress Pegegy Allenby after a divorce from Robert Armstrong said she does not want alimony. She stated she has an independent income and earns her own living and criticized the idea of widows keeping a former spouse's money without love.
Robbers in a stolen car hit Shannon City Knowlton and Tingley on Friday night while breaking into 20 stores. They secured under 250 dollars total with about 40 to 50 from Maple & Company lumber yard and nearly 200 from six shops in Tingley. Fingerprints were found as clues. the car was abandoned in Osceola after early morning.
A Sioux City dispatch reports two Nebraska men H E Riffey of Ponca and James Barton of Winnebago killed when their car left the road four miles north of Homer and plunged into a ditch. The crash left the vehicle overturned and trapped the passengers. smothering in soft dirt is suspected. Also fatal injuries from an auto wreck near Yankton claim the life of Mrs. David M. Finnegan, with daughter Miss Doreen Finnegan, mother Mrs. S N Hereford, and grandson David Finnegan among the dead.
Mrs Margaret Fahrenkrug of Minden Iowa died in a hospital in Council Bluffs from injuries after her car was struck by a Milwaukee train at Neola. She was thrown against a freight train on a siding and her body was run over by the moving train while en route home from South Omaha.
Governor Hammill announced the appointment of Stewart Gilman R J Andrews and Ward T Evans of Sioux City to a joint Iowa Nebraska bridge commission. The panel will study a Missouri river crossing site in Woodbury County. no funding was provided, to be decided by the next legislature.
Four people including Mrs James Cronin left this morning for Omaha to spend the day as part of a local social outing. Her companions were not listed in the report.
Second graders presented a westward building play directed by Miss Rutledge to a packed Irving building audience. Virginia Reel accompanied by the grade orchestra, and Margaret Utter sang Home Sweet Home as a finale. Afterward, visitors joined games and stories while local associations officials spoke and Cromwell and Afton invited Creston and Cromwell to visit later.
The case of C. T. Gibson of Thayer charged with selling mortgaged cattle was given to a district court jury. The jury had not reached a verdict by 2:45 p.m. after motions and closing arguments by both sides.
S. H. Fisher, 98, died at 1 30 this afternoon at the home of his daughter Mrs George AL Johnson, 803 North Highland Street. Arrangements for the funeral have not been announced.
Mrs Anna Cunningham of Gary Indiana widow who confessed to poisoning and killing three of her children was arraigned before Justice of the Peace H H Kemp in her jail cell and bound over to the Lake County criminal court without bail on a first degree murder charge.

B J Fry, longtime head of Creston high school commercial department, will be offered a contract as high school principal for 1925-26 after a school board decision. He would succeed P D Covert, who was re elected but has not returned his contract. The board renewed most staff contracts and will add a few replacements. Commencement speaker E H Lauer of Iowa City was approved. The Union County Sunday School convention elected J C Richter Creston president and installed officers across multiple towns. 111 workers attended with 29 delegations as the convention closed with a community consciousness address by Walter Hutton.
Lincoln first team defeated Irving 19 to 6 on the Lincoln diamond Friday afternoon. Irving battery: Carroll Jennings pitcher and Royal Huckins catcher. Lincoln pitcher: Gerald Lininger. catcher: Gerald Braumberger. Umpire Bid Breese, from Franklin school, did a good job.
Sheriff reports a light sedan owned by Dave Kelley of Aston was stolen Friday night and dumped in Osceola this morning. The car was taken from the Kelley garage. Assistant post master George Brotherton is ill at his home on North Male Street. About a dozen Creston high school track athletes travel to Stuart for the season opener, with Creston entering four relays.
New York reports Frederic Cameron Church Jr of Boston praised Miss Muriel Vanderbilt as the ideal wife among four hundred socialites. She reportedly eschews smoking and drinking, wore conservative bathing outfits at Palm Beach, and uses neither rouge nor lipstick.
The Catholic Daughters of America arrange initiation for a large group of candidates Sunday afternoon at the Knights of Columbus hall. After initiation a banquet will be served at the hall by Knights of Columbus members.

The volunteer fire department announced its forty second annual ball for May 20 in Armory hall and a street parade in the business district. Six candidates were initiated into Ben Hurlodge, 12 membership applications were pending. The lodge hosts were Mrs John Holmes. A district court verdict favored the Burlington for a damage case after J D Mayhew et al spent a night in the jury room. A peace program was presented by Progressive Chautauqua Circle and the Ruthean class of the Methodist church gathered at 622 North Birch. High school seniors posted top averages led by Marguerite Thomas 98.40 and Richard Young 95.42. The Q inter-county tuberculosis conference convened in Creston via the Bizevir club with doctors and health workers. Rumors of a south side shooting scrape proved untrue with Officer Frederickson investigating.
The Creston hotel on Adams and Elm streets and the connected theater, forming a 120 by 120 foot square, were sold today for around 100000 to J J Patt of Creston. The three story brick hotel fronts Adams, 90 feet, includes Antlers cigar store and Nick Concola’s candy shop. the theater seats about 1000 and fronts Adams 60 feet. The property is leased and operated by W F Finefield. Hurlburt and Hurlburt announced the sale.
Evelyn Heessel daughter of Mr and Mrs John H Heessel 1209 West Jefferson street won third place in the pianial class of the southwestern Iowa high school music contest held in Des Moines Friday Miss Heessel represented Creston high school Newton girl first and a Des Moines girl second Most pianists were eliminated in the forenoon preliminaries Heessel was one of three in the finals playing two numbers Russell Neville of Orient high school pupil of Charles A Hayden Creston won first in the vocal class and will compete in the state contest April 24 at Iowa City
Des Moines on April 18 announced the winners Arthur Cohn of Des Moines in violin Russell Neville of Orient in voice Dorothy Hinchliff of Minburn in female voice and Grace Stanley of Newton in piano for the state musical contest held last night in the city.

Laura Spellman Rockefeller memorial fund presents $133,500 to the Iowa Child Welfare research station. $100,000 funds the local school for five years, $20,000 supports parent training across Iowa cities for three years, and $3,500 buys new equipment. Since its founding by Dr Bird Baldwin eight years ago, the station has gained international notice for child development research conducted in Iowa.

Earl KR Russell and R Le Pers sels unite with Frank Flumme to open the Lowana Shop in a basement room of the Lowana hotel about May 1. Montgom ery street stairway access is nearly finished and new fixtures include four chairs plus kid chairs. Orle Gorrell joins as the fourth chair, rejoining from Clarinda where he worked 15 years.
Members of the Baptist Young People's Union of the First Baptist church motored to Corning Friday evening for a district rally at the Corning Baptist church. After services a social hour with refreshments followed attendance by Rosaie Abel, Geraldine Amerson, Lela Howan, Clarence Collings, George Atwood, Oral Nelson, Opal Nelson, Viela Carlson, Margaret Kiesling, Louisa Grinnell and Esther Hoggatt.
