Frank Clayton held on highway robbery charges was killed after a failed jail break at the Fort Dodge county courthouse. Deputy Fisher fired as Clayton fled from the fourth floor lobby toward the sheriff's office, and Sheriff Lochray's shot at the lobby entry proved fatal when Clayton burst through the front door to the sidewalk.

Fire destroys dairy barn and livestock at East Amana

Fire swept a dairy barn on the edge of East Amana Iowa destroying 38 cows 43 calves two bulls and one horse. Over 2000 bushels of grain and several machines were lost as flames spread to nearby sheds. Damage estimated 25000 to 50000 with no insurance. Two strangers detained for investigation.

Speer Takes Manager Post With Burlington Baseball Club

Dick Speer of Creston becomes manager of the Burlington club in the Mississippi Valley League today. A two week training period begins next week with 40 candidates reporting for tryouts. The opening season on May 6 will list 16 roster names, then drop to 14 two weeks later to meet league rules.

Chapman Denies Being In New Britain Store

Gerald Chapman on the stand in Hartford denying he was in the Davidson and Leventhal store in New Britain where Patrolman James Skelly was murdered during the October robbery. Detroit April 2 Representatives of Dion Read and company continued today the work of completing the details of the transfer of Dodge Bros Inc to their banker employers. The public was without assurance that further details would be given out immediately. Information from time to time was assured by the spokesman. The sale was said to have consummated with very minor details. In New York the price was set at something above 150000000 and possibly 175000000.

Engine and Tender Derailment Halts Burlington Train

A 75 ton locomotive pulling Burlington main line No 8 east bound and its tender derailed about 9:30 PM Wednesday in the yards, 50 yards east of New York avenue crossing. No injuries reported. Engineer T M Kenworthy and fireman W M Ralls identified. Crews began clearing tracks at dawn and expected completion by noon.

Creston Man Emmet Matheny Sentenced At Anamosa

Emmet Matheny of Creston was sentenced by Judge A R Maxwell in district court at Com mie to one year in the state reformatory at Anamosa for driving a car while intoxicated. He was found guilty by a jury last week and plans to appeal with bond of 1000 to carry the case to the state supreme court.

High School Students Leave for Midwest Music Contest

One hundred private coach travelers from Cedar Rapids depart for Kansas City to compete in the Midwestern music contest. The group includes boys and girls glee clubs, mixed choruses, orchestras, and the Council Bluffs band joins all entries. Crowds gathers at the station to cheer the musicians.
