Reverend J. E. Curry will lead Sabbath morning lessons on the last part of Luke chapter ten, focusing on Martha's Mistake. The address aims to benefit many worshippers in attendance.
Rev. C W Heisley preaches Sunday at 10 30 A M on There should be a Heaven and at 7 30 P M Beyond. Children’s Day at First Presbyterian sees six baptisms Emma L Bennett Wallace Winquest Stults Clara Hilliard Applegate Marvin L Bennett Grace Morris Peppler John T Peppler. Second Presbyterian records two baptisms Kenneth John Rogers and Alberta Stults Dey.
Mrs Josephine Brown died early Sunday at the home of Mrs Anna Spaulding where she and her husband had been boarding. She had suffered complete exhaustion of the nerves weeks before and did not regain consciousness. She leaves her husband Joseph Brown and two sisters Mrs Van Wert and Mrs Edward Potter of Jersey City. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Mrs Spaulding’s with Rev Adolps Allen presiding. Interment was in the Second Presbyterian cemetery.
The funeral of Harry Petty of Somerville son of Charles Petty will be held tomorrow at two o'clock at the Methodist church. Interment follows in Brainerd cemetery. He is a nephew of Wm H Petty and Nelson Petty of Cranbury.
The Ladies Reading Circle met at Mrs. J. D. Chamberlin's home for readings and a discussion on a Woman's Club. Clara Chamberlin recited and Olive Petty played two piano solos. Officers were elected with Mrs. Bradley as President and Miss Clara Chamberlin as Second Vice President, among other posts. The group praised last year’s officers and adjourned after refreshments.
The Cranbury High School graduation featured four graduates Miss Helen Butcher Miss Mary McDougall Miss Olive Petty and Miss Sara S Perrine though Mires Perrine was absent. Essays by Olive Petty Mary McDougall and Helen Butcher and prophecies by Ethel Cole and Elsie Johnson impressed. Ina Puerschner sang softly and Miss McClenaghan led the school songs. Reverend James Ramsay Swain of Philadelphia delivered the address, a forceful speech its weight echoed in many communities. The 1911 commencement is hailed as among the best yet.
An unusual lightning visit damaged the Methodist church of Hightstown about a thousand dollars with no fire. The Dayton Presbyterian steeple was struck, a hole opened. At Larches in north Cranbury several shocks affected inmates and a dog, and dishes flew from the table. Lightning also struck telephone wires at Voorhees and Cham berlins. the Voorhees family suffered a severe shock.
A severe electrical storm struck the Hightstown Baptist Church during the Peddie Institute Junior Prize Declamation Contest. Lightning set the steeple aflame, plunging the building into darkness and injuring several spectators as the fire spread swiftly downward. Fire units from Hights town and nearby Trenton battled the blaze, saving the main structure while the two ton bell hung precariously in the still-scorched steeple. The auditorium flooded but remained intact, and nearby properties were saved with volunteer help. The church, dedicated 1858, features cathedral glass windows and a Roosevelt organ with a stone surrounding wall.
Mrs. Frank Pettee returns to Jamesburg with her 3 year old son Harvey after a marriage split with Charles C. Emens. They traveled March 29 from town to Trenton Philadelphia Harrisburg Pittsburg before Emens deserted. On June 13 they met and fought. Pettee battered Emens who denied prior meetings.
At Cranbury Township Board of Education meeting the High School project is continued and will be submitted to the State Superintendent for approval. Della Bergen is named for the primary department replacing Miss McClenaghan. A Wesley College senior is hired as assistant High School teacher. John Barclay attends New Jersey Horticultural Society executive committee meeting at Moorestown, whereMr Roberts’ large fruit farm impresses guests. The summer Society meeting will be held at Red Bank.
