Changes were announced in Indian Agency appointments by the Dominion Civil Service Commission. H. F. Helmsing of Victoria arrives to take over district duties at Fort Steele after a day in Duncan. Helmsing, former naval secretary and Navy League organizer, is not new to the region. Government quarters at Fort Steele are being considered for the Helmsings' permanent residence.

Cranbrook City Council Chooses War Memorial Plan

Junior Members Win Swimming Tests at CGRC
Junior members of the CGRC completed half yearly swimming tests at the club pool on Monday and Tuesday. Boys passed events include diving for plates and relay races with Allan Gill, Ernest Laurie, and Eric Nisbet among top performers. Junior girls also swam well with Betty Mirams and Barbara Beale leading the pack.

Minister Pattullo Curtails Europe Trip
The Hon. T. D. Pattullo, Minister of Lands, will leave England around the 16th to return home, dropping plans to visit Egypt to assess British Columbia lumber markets. He and agent-general F. C. Wade just finished a tour of Norway and Sweden studying water power, paper making, and air derived nitrogen fertilizer for potential province uses. Lumber Commissioner W. Turnbull, who joined the trip, could not proceed to Egypt due to his wife’s illness in London, with remaining funds of $500 to $600 to be supplied by the city.

Will Rebuild Plant Here at Cranbrook After Fire
Cranbrook Sash and Door Co plans to rebuild its planing mill and sash and door factory on the old site beside the track. The two story building, about 60 by 110 feet, will house all machinery under one roof with lighter upstairs work spaces. Local men may work alongside specialists from Kitchener. Henderson plant from Golden will be moved here. The project may use electric power if available or steam, with power from the BC and Alberta Co. anticipated. The move could bring several dozen new jobs and families to the city.

The memorial committee and city council agreed to place an order for a stone monument on G W V A grounds. Designs were narrowed to four and a Calgary firm will supply the monument at about 1800 dollars, with two thirds funded by public subscriptions. It is due to be in place within two months.

Memorial Tablet for Rev Flewelling at Christ Church Cranbrook
Friends of the late Rev Edward Purdy Flewelling, former Rector of Christ Church Cranbrook, raise a brass memorial tablet to be unveiled next Wednesday. Esteemed Cranbrook baritone L. Douglas Rengger departs next week to join the Vassar Institute in New York for voice production and choral work. Known locally for his work with the Knox Church choir and his studio, he has earned praise in Vancouver and other major centers for his cultured voice and violin artistry. Born in England, his escape from Russia during the Bolshevik upheaval and subsequent service in the Flying Corps are noted, along with his role as interpreter for Viscount Bryce in Siberia.

Destructive Fire Wipes Out Buildings Near Markle Store
A Tuesday afternoon blaze at Bull River destroyed most buildings between Markle's store and Oscar Jostad's, mostly Chinese restaurants and laundries.
