By a 203 to 74 vote Cranbrook ratepayers rejected the proposed six thousand dollar addition to the Arena rink. Spoiler ballots occurred. Critics warned the by-law favored curlers and could burden the Recreation Club, while opponents argued it would waste funds.
The Cranbrook Hockey Club will hold its organization meeting Monday night at eight at the YMCA to discuss the coming season. A full attendance is requested and all interested are invited as the district league meets on Tuesday December 4.
The Star Theatre signs with Paramount Pictures for two big films on Christmas Day and New Years Day. Christmas features His Children’s Children starring Bebe Daniels and George Fawcett with Hale Hamilton and twelve others, adapted from Arthur Train. New Years presents Ruggles of Red Gap, a clean comedy from a popular stage story, with a notable star cast.
Mrs. Clapp of Euphrata has been visiting son Lester Clapp in this city and returned home Sunday. Knox church hosted a social Friday honoring Mrs. R. Wye of Cranbrook who plans to move to Vernon where Mr Eye now resides. Rev B W McKay voiced regret over the departure of a valued worker. Mrs Bye thanked the group for the silver and glass flower holder and for their appreciation of her efforts.
A further 202.36 was forwarded to Victoria from Cranbrook district for the Japanese Relief Fund. Contributions came from Mogie Fort Steele Sullivan Mill Yahk Camps 15 and 17 Yahk Camps 16 and 18 Bull River Mill Kimberley Town Lumberton and other supporters.
Maple Leaf Rebekah Lodge No. 19 hosted Grand President Mrs. G. L. Motion of Nelson during her BC province tour. Noble Grand W. W. Wolfer welcomed her, the degree team performed initiation work, and the Grand President gave an expansive address. District Deputy President J. McCallum and Key City Lodge No. 42 members attended. A silver candlesticks gift was presented, and a social hour followed with Grace Higgins’s solo. A reception for the Grand President was held the next afternoon at Mrs. W. S. Johnson’s home.
The Cranbrook Recreation Club reports a resolved formation of an individual clergy membership and a 50 name drive. Upcoming events include a December 1 badminton class with tea and swim, a December 15 members-only dance, and ongoing programs for Business Men and Business Girls classes led by Mr. Salter. The rink will open when weather permits and a Cranbrook hockey team is planned. A Rotary Club proposition is promised next week.

The City Transfer Co receives a temporary contract to carry mails between Cranbrook and Fort Steele, linking with Kootenay Central trains under the new schedule. Northbound mails close about noon on Mondays and Thursdays, while southbound trains on Wednesdays and Saturdays see mails off at Fort Steele and delivered to Cranbrook by around 1 p.m. Tender submissions to Ottawa have not expired, but the service starts Saturday, December 1.
At the last regular meeting the school board passed a resolution to discontinue presentations by individual scholars or classes to teachers at term end or other times. It directs teachers to accept no present other than flowers from students. Also notes Mrs. McMutrie visited Cranbrook and A W Fletcher, Dominion fruit inspector, was in the city.
The Week in the Legislature notes a calm spell in Victoria as debates focus on the throne speech and redistribution bill. It reports the province’s gross debt rising from 28.1 million to 71.4 million since 1916, with 4.2 million owed to the Bank of Commerce due January 2, 1924 and potential borrowing totaling 9.5 million. It highlights bills by M. Hart and a costly legal fee by M. McGeer, while noting voter discontent and an exodus of government staff.
At the regular meeting of Key City Lodge I O F the elective officers for the next half yearly term were appointed. They will take office after the customary installation in January. Officers named include Magat thee Vaan Bro, R Leonard Vidi fats cress Bro, A Burtoh Rec, See Bro E G Dingley PG Fin See Bro W D Gilroy PLG Treas Bro FP G Morris PG.
Miss Gladys Dorothy Harrad and Mr J S Hannay were wed at Christ Church Fernie at 4 p.m. on Saturday November 10 with Rev H W Oswald officiating. The couple received gifts of jewelry tableware and linen and guests shared a supper at the bride's mother's home.
The post office warns holiday senders to mail gifts as soon as possible to avoid delays from peak congestion. Packages should be well wrapped and marked Do not open until Christmas. European deliveries should also be sent promptly with Montclare sailing from St John on December 7th and northern Ireland insured under same terms as Great Britain.
Judge Thompson rules the Cosmopolitan Hotel is not an inn under the Liquor Act, defining inn as a traveler's house with meals and lodging for casual travelers. If unappealed, the decision could force amendments to the Liquor Act since few Cranbrook hotels would qualify as inns.
The Women’s Institute plans a full turnout for the Tuesday December 4 meeting at GW WA Hall. Officers will be elected and members must pay their dues to vote. Mr H J Porter of the high school gave two profitable addresses at the Methodist church and spoke on the Power of Prayer. Wednesday study classes led by Porter include teachers from Sunday schools across Protestant churches and attract many men.
A Monday crowd filled K P Hall as Dr J W McIntosh of Vancouver urged a new party’s rise. He attacked Premier Oliver and Mr Bowser, claiming 23 000 members and 200 daily additions, and urged a royal commission into the PG E to probe charges of wrongdoing. Delegates J H Cameron F Bond and F Maidment were named to attend the Vancouver convention.
A Wednesday St Andrew’s night gathering at the Auditorium honored Scotland’s patron saint. Rev E W MacKay chaired the evening with Burns’ Address to the Haggis, haggis supper, bagpipes by Allan Graham, and performances by Mrs F M MacPherson I Hannah C J Lewis and others followed by a late floor dance until about two a.m.
